Youth and diabetes

Hey! A fellow member of the forum just got me to thinking, I've never tasted a banana split, or a chocolate nut sundae, all thanks to my diabetes. Darn! I wasn't allowed to be a member of the track team while in high school because of diabetes, even though I could outrun several members of the team in Physical Education class. I wonder what other fun things I've missed?

Wow. I wonder which is better/worse: to get it when you're young, and not have exposure to those types of things? Or get it when you're an adult (I was 24) having had a "normal" childhood, and then have to change your lifestyle? Good question!

Personally, I'm glad I didn't get it 'til I was an adult - I was better able to deal w/ it, I think, than I would have been as a teenager.

If you learn to count carbs, you might be able to "walk on the wild side" every now and then!

I don't really want a banana split, but if my weight is OK and I'm doing OK on BG, why not have one? as long as I cover it with the proper amount of insulin

Hey! Unfair! I wanted to use the quote that goes something like "I am a river unto my people" from Lawrence of Arabia! I'm just going to have to take all my toys and go home!

yup, lgvincent

it's time for me to re-read Lowell Thomas' Lawrence in Arabia

cause I get this feeling that I'm gonna get a copy of Lawrence'sThe Seven Pillars of Wisdom from Santy Clause

About the banana split (of which I miss terribly... they were one of my favorites)...

Couldn't a person bolus a little more insulin to balance out the carbs in the split? or am I thinking like a sneaky diabetic?

I have yet to do this, of course. Still following the rules because I'm new and chicken... but ohhhh how tempting!

Best wishes,
Angie

Youth and diabetes

Angie,

Seems to me,
if you keep in mind that banana splits and all that stuff leads to the "Battle of the Huge" and do the right things that a normal person would do, we can eat anything we want to

Having Diabetes at any time in a person's life is not good. I also was dx'ed as an adult and I'm glad it happened then if it had to happen at all. Childhood and adolescence is hard enough as it is w/o dealing with a chronic disease. I don't know how I would have managed it. Now at this age, I am a little more mature,a little more responsibe, and just better equipped to deal with it. Also, I think I would have missed out on alot of things in childhood if I was dealiing with this then.

Am1977, I am in total agreement!

Angie, I can't speak for T2's, but as T1's (or those on insulin) - yes, you can figure the carbs and dose accordingly. HOWEVER, I know it's difficult right now to avoid those things, but it would really be better for you to wait until you've got a handle on things. I find that if I'm having problems and I go ahead and indulge anyway, it just makes things worse. Patience, my dear!

Sorry about that zookeeper. My big weakness is brownies. I can't help it, when I get around brownies I'm kind of like a shark in a feeding frenzy. Anything that gets between me and the brownies is in danger of being consumed.

A banana split from Dairy Queen on average will have about 100 carbs. Yes I've had one, yes I've bolused for the 100 carbs and it worked out wonderfully
