Tattoos!

Hey all

hope everyone is doing fine!

Another question for you all! Im thinking of getting a tattoo tomorrow, and was wondering, as a T1 if i was allowed to go through this proceedure of getting one?

Do i need any special medical clearance at all??

I dont imagine so but i thought i better ask so i dont waste my time

Kind regards

I think someone has asked this before so you could try & do a search - I think it's fine though. Ouch!

That would have been me.!

Me and my friend were going to get one done. But I decided the day beofre that I shouldn't, because I dont heal properly. And she chickend out in the shop!

You'll be ok though, as long as you heal properly. Have you had an operations etc before? you should know about your own 'healing' if you have.

A know a diabetic who has been in poor control but is now making great efforts to control it because they will only be "allowed" to have the tattoo if they control their diabetes for 3 months.

I'll be getting another tattoo on my chest after my next son is born, to go along with the tattoo I put on my chest after my first son was born. And no, I had 0 issues of any kind during the healing process, and trust me when I say no one in a tattoo parlor is even going to ask if you are diabetic.

I had gone to a professional shop to get my first one doen but was handed a questionaire to fill out. One of the question was Are you diabetic? Silly me answered yes and they turned me away. After that I had the tattoo down by a friend of mine who was running a business out of his basement.

There aren't any regulations in the States about requiring medical clearance or anything, I don't know about the UK, though I doubt it. When I got mine here, I was also given a questionnaire to fill out and they did ask about diabetes. You could always lie, but I was honest, said yes, but it didn't stop them, I think they asked me if I was in decent control or if I had any problems healing and I said yes, great control, no, I heal well. They were likely more concerned about whether I was HIV+ or had Hepatitis B or C. I had absolutely no problem healing either.

Just make sure you go to a clean place!

I got a tattoo 10 or 11 years ago, when I was NOT in good control. I was still on 2 fixed shots a day and did not test my BG at all. My brother took me to a place near where he lived that he said was very clean (he had some done there himself). I got a gecko on my lower left leg, a pretty good size, and healed with no problems. I vaguely remember a form I filled out and I'm pretty sure I said "no" to everything. I guess that the better tattoo places want to cover themselves. I can definitely see a poorly controlled diabetic suing a place because they got an infection, even if the shop was perfectly sterile.

what does everyone mean by 'healing'?

From scars etc?

If so then i seem to do alrite, im glad there are people who've had one and can relate. My BG is under control

Im planning to have it running down my forearm, which ive been told is not as bad as other places such as the upper arm.

I might not be having one tomorrow now but definately investing in one.

Thanks!

When you have something punture your skin or get a tattoo you have an open wound that needs time to close up or "heal" if it doesn't "heal" fast enough it can lead to infections and one infection can lead to another.

I have 3 tattoos and 11 piercings. Never had any problems with them at all - I actually got most of them around age 18, when my diabetes were at their worst. Good luck with the ink!
