On tonight's NBC Nightline, they had a scumbag pedophile, who went into "Diabetic shock" and was taken to the hospital and treated. I have heard this term many times, but really am not sure what it means...a low, a high?

| | | It's one many consider a low. Also known by many as an insulin reaction, aka insulin shock, aka a hypo. I'm sure there's many other names for it. I saw that too. It would be interesting to know how true something like that is.
We once had a female we had 2 warrants out for do that. She barracaded herself into her house, and said she wasn't coming out because she was terrified for her life. After a standoff for 2 hours she came out and we brought her to the PD where she started to hyperventilate. So she got a ride to the hospital. She was then left with hospital security overnight and we were notified when she was released. On the way to the police car, she then fell on the ground and claimed she was having a diabetic reaction. Upon taking her back to the hospital, they said she had to be lying since she was in the hospital for just over 24 hours without notifying them she was diabetic and she had a perfect BG level. Needless to say, she earned a count of obstruction of justice added to her other charges.

You could tell (imo) it wasn't the first time he used diabetes as a crutch to divert a problem, and I wonder if her really did. One of my diabetic friends (I developed quite a few through out my life, mainly from diabetic camp) was in jail for multiple dui's, and he couldn't use his pump and they only allowed nph and regular. Diabetic criminals get it extra bad in prison. More incentive to stay out  |

| | | I would imagine diabetic shock would be low blood sugar. However, it seems people in the press and entertainment don't really understand any of the terms related to diabetes and they will use whatever they feel comfortable with to describe any situation. I've heard people in television use terms like shock (or perhaps diabetic shock) when talking about high blood sugar and ketoacidosis when talking about insulin reaction. They just don't know what they are talking about.
