BBQs - any advice?

I love BBQs but I find them practically impossible to bolus for. I don't usually have a lot of sauce or marinades with my meat but I'll usually have a bap or two for burgers. However, no matter what I do, I just can't get it right. Generally I will eat more in terms of volume at a BBQ but it will almost be 100% meat. It'll also obviously be staggered over a couple of hours too.

Generally what I do is bolus after I've finished. If I bolus when I start, I will have hypos before I'm finished. But if I bolus afterwards, it's never enough. Even if I bolus for if I've had as many carbs as I'd have in a usual meal, I just can't get it sorted, I'll run far too high.

However I really haven't figured out my comp bolus for this - usually what I'll do is whack in another 20% of my dose, wait 2 hours, find I'm still high, add another 10% and then BANG, I'm practically dead from the hypo. Yet if I bolus say even an extra 50% as an initial comp. bolus, I'll still be running high.

As an example, say at the start of the BBQ my BG is 4.5. After eating, I've eaten enough carbs to require 10u of Novorapid. So I'll do 17u, as if I was eating a normal carb meal. 2 hours later, I'm over 10mmol/l so I take another 6-7u. 2 hours later, I'm still running over 10. Yet if I add another 3-4u, within 20 minutes I'll have dropped so much I'm getting 'Lo' on my meter.

I'm aware of why BBQs do this to me (delayed conversion of protein to glucose in large quantities) - what I'm more interested in is how other people deal with the problem. Any tips?

I love bbq and in fact did a bbq tonight. I often eat meals of protein only and I bolus without issue. I take 50% of the protein content as equivalent carbs and bolus for that. But... I do a combo bolus, taking 30% of the insulin immediately and then the other 70% over 3 hours. You probably would have to do something similiar, but with MDI.

Hours after I've eaten, I often go high after a high-protein meal like a big steak or a big hamburger. Historically, I have not bolused for protein, but I think I'll try counting half the protein as carbs and do an extended bolus over about 4 hours.
