| | blasted diabetes he says........ Howdy all!!
Please allow me to introduce myself, (name that tune)
I was diagnosed two days ago, the doctor never told me if it was I or II, I am guessing II because of my age. I will find out more on Tuesday when I go for my blood profile and meet with the dietician or dietitian (why are there two ways to spell this word??? mystery!)
My eyes have barely dried. But, I'm ready to be educated and get started. I'm sure you all remember how you felt during this time.
I'm relatively young, 28, so this was a total shocker! I have no family history of diabetes, I exersise and I don't eat out of control. Since from what I have read it seems no one really knows why it happends, only that most people are overweight, therefore, I blame myself. That is the hardest part I am trying to deal with, is forgiving myself for years of not eating super healthy, and getting this weight off. I'm curious to see what I will be eating considering I already don't eat sugar (no carbs, I guess). I already understand all about food, just not diabetic food.
Cooking is one of my favorite hobbies, I fear that I will have to give it up, or get more creative. This is a big deal to me.
I have the most wonderful husband in the world to support me, and with him, I'm still the luckiest woman in the world. Last night he told me he would give anything in the world for it to have been him and not me. I also have an adorable pomeranian that I love more than myself.
I researched all the forums and I like this one the best, you guys have some great posts. I look forward to talking with you.
I have one hundred questions, but I bet I will get most of them answered on Tuesday. I will ask just one:
Do you guys remember your first blood sugar level? Mine was 323, now, I know that it's high, but I am wondering if I am way off the charts? I am not educated on diabetes yet, please bare with me.
Talk you you soon, Leigh

| | | Welcome! I'm glad you was able to find us. Feel free to ask those one hundred question before Tuesday. The more you know before then, the better off you will be going in.
I have only seen dieticain spelled one way, but then again it all depends on who's spelling it. I think Diabetes is a mystery in its self.
If I was to guess, I would guess your a type1. Because you are only 28 and you have no family history of Diabetes.
You can't give up carbs. DeusXM has posted some real good info on why we need carbs somewhere but I can't find it right now.
My first blood sugar reading was over 500. A good reading is 90 -120.

| | Hi Leigh, and Welcome! I'm sorry to hear you have diabetes. It's a drag, but you can control this disease and live well with it. I could write a novel, but I'm going to try not to. You are or are going to be overwhelmed w/ info at first, try to learn and read all you can, and then maybe in 6mos meet w/ the Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE/dietician) again for a refresher course.
It is difficult to say from your post if you are T1 or T2. If you are overweight, then it is possible you are T2, but given your age and lack of family history it is entirely likely that you may be T1, which will mean you have to inject insulin. Did you loose a lot of weight suddenly, or become so thirsty there wasn't enough water on the planet to quench your thirst? Don't feel bad, my diagnostic blood sugar (b/s) was in the upper 400's. If you enjoy cooking, then you're halfway there. Most of us now practice a system of eating called Carbohydrate Counting. It means that we can eat pretty much anything we want, as long as we inject enough insulin or take the proper meds to keep our b/s in the normal range.
I'm so glad you have someone who will help you and loves you. Sound's like hubby's a keeper (so's mine ). This is a difficult and emotional time, and it's not going to be much fun, but try to keep in mind that it WILL get better, and that there is no reason you cannot do and enjoy all the things you planned on. Don't know if you have/want kids, but you can be a mother, so don't think for a minute that you can't.
I'm T1 for 12 years, on Multiple Daily Injections. We are all happy to meet you, glad you found us, and willing and eager to comfort you, answer your questions, and share experiences. Please visit and post often. Feel free to PM me anytime!
Welcome again!

| | Welcome Rainsunbow.
Here is a good place to get many questions answered. Andd get many more questions ready for your Dr. and Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE).
You could even be Type 1.5
When they caught me I was over 600, I think.
Having the support of a spouse is a very good thing. I know, I've got a great wife helping me.

| | Hello Leigh! And welcome to this wonderful forum. You will like it, I'm sure.
I'm 40, T2 and diet controlled so far. First blood reading was 15 I believe (270 for you). But I've had diabetic pregnancies, I was aware I could develop diabetes one day.
When you are told you are diabetic, not only does your heart stop... it seems the whole planet stops too! Take time to really let the news sink in. It's wonderful you have a husband that is giving you moral support and understanding.
I *l*o*v*e* to cook! And the word is weak. You will not have to give it up. I can only talk from my experience as a T2 but in my humble opinion, there is NO 'diabetic food'. Only good things you can prepare and enjoy. But since you've recently been diagnosed, take the time to learn about diabetes, see the dietician and (mostly)... don't think your life is over. It's not! Far from it. From now on, whether you're T1 or T2, you will take good care of yourself. Don't you deserve it too? Life is precious.
Looking forward to hear from you again. In the mean time, take care!
Marie

| | | Your Welcome!
Her name is Holly. She is a great. But she has a problem.
She runs after my neighbors dog, when it comes in my yard. Which would be fine but the other dog is bigger.

| | Hi Leigh,
Welcome! Good to have you here w/ us. If you have any questions or comments feel free to ask. We all try to help each other out here and provide support for each other.
In my opinion, you are probably type 2, though no one can say except your MD. It just sounds that way, b/c if you were type 1 you would have been feeling crappy all of a sudden, extremely thirsty, exhausted, have sudden weight loss, among a lot of other unpleasant symptoms. Whatever the case, it is a difficult condition to live with, but you can manage it and be healthy. In fact some people claim that they are healthier after their diagnosis due to it changing their lifestyle...meaning exercising frequently and eating healthy.
Please keep us updated with you. I wish you well with everything.
Take care,
Andrea |

| | Andrea,
Nice to meet you! Thank you for the support.
I did start feeling crappy all of the sudden. I got a few infections in my who..who..dilly month after month. I all the sudden had blurred vision, I am extremely thirsty, and all I want to to is sleep all day and all night (although I am still able to exercise in my daily routine). However, I have only lost 8 lbs (i weigh 240) in 30 days, is that a lot of weight loss? I would say no, but I wasn't really trying to loose it.
I don't know, I guess I will find out on Tuesday.
with love

| | | Hi Leigh!! It's great to have you here you've come to the right place to have your questions answered, and it's a fun bunch of people. Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. Sounds like T2 to me, but hey I don't have a PhD so I suggest you ask your Doctor. Are you taking insulin injections or pills, or has your doctor asked you to try to lose weight?
My Doctor misdiagnosed me when I was 11, so for 2 weeks I stayed home from school and lost so much weight I was down to 48lbs by the time my mom took me into the hospital and my blood sugar was a whopping 33mmol (that's 594mg/dL). My mom went up one side of that doctor and right down the other. It's a good memory lol. :p
Let us know how it goes on Tuesday (i'm going to assume that's a doctor appointment day?) and what the final verdict is. And keep on smiling!

| | Hiya Leigh~ Welcome. As you've probably noticed, everyone here is so sweet, friendly, and always willing to listen, offer advice and help any way they're able. As for asking many questions, feel free. When I first joined this site I was loaded with questions and suffering from information overload... and I was met with total kindness.
As for being type 1 or 2, further testing will determine that for you. I'm the type of person that usually suffers from the "least common" side effects from most medications, so my body decided to keep things consistent and give me type 1 at the age of 32. (My blood sugar level at diagnosis was 484.) Type 1 can occur in a person at any age, but it's not very common after the age of 30. From the info you've posted, it kind of sounds like you could be a type 2.
I remember how scared, upset, angry, and brain fried (from all of the diabetes info) I was for the first month after diagnosis. Heck... I'm still upset and a bit fried, but not nearly as bad, since it's been 4 months since my diagnosis. You'll make it through this, Leigh. Hang in there... it gets easier.
Best wishes,
Angie
(P.S. I, too, would like to have kids someday. )
