| | | My Medic Alert Bracelet is driving me nuts! Okay, I just got my Medic Alert bracelet on Monday. When I ordered it, they advises ordering it 1/2 size larger than you need so that it would be easier to flip over and read the information on the back. Well, I think it is too big. Right now I have it on the same wrist as my watch. I have it above the watch. The "charm" part always slips down or gets turned around. Or it slides to the bottom of my wrist as opposed to the top of my wrist where I put it for visability. Sometimes it even gets hidden down behind my watch, which of course would be defeating the purpose of having the bracelet.
And just in case you are going to say to put the watch or the bracelet on the opposite wrist, I am very uncomfortable with anything on that wrist. I have tried it before and it really bothers me to have something on that wrist.
So, since I am a newbie and also only wearing the bracelet for 2 1/2 days, would those of you with the voice of experience, please speak?
Thank you. |

| | I hate wearing jewelry! I have a medic alert medallion on a chain. I never wear it...I don't wear (or even OWN) a wedding ring. I've no suggestion other than to carry a card in your wallet indicating your medical status... |

You also give MedicAlert.org your emergency contacts, doctor's office, a list of meds you are on, etc... The bracelet has a toll-free number, your condition, and a member number. If I were passed out or something, emergency responders could call the toll-free number, give them my ID # and get a list of my meds, emergency contacts, etc...
So, my bracelet says "800-xxx-xxxx (whatever the toll-free number is) DIABETES - xxxxxxxxxxxx (my member number)"
I just kind of thought everyone had one because my Diabetes Management Team told (strongly suggested) everyone in class last week to get one. |

| | | I have one because I work in police work and know that seconds can be life or death. Especially in a car accident. And going for your wallet in an accident is sometimes the last thing the do, especially if they have to extracate you from the vehicle.
I don't have the full medic alert bracelet though. Mine is by some other company that makes the bracelet on a nylon band. I hate metal bands on my wrists. The nylon over the years has actually molded to my wrist so it doesn't slide around at all.
I'm not sure what to suggest to you. My only ideas are to maybe take it to a jewelry store and see if they can shorten it a tad for you to not slide.

I figure if my insulin pump doesn't tip off a "first responder" that I'm a diabetic, a piece of jewelry isn't going to clue them in any further... |

| | | I don't own or use a Medic Alert anything. I've had them, but they were annoying. They do make the necklaces which some find more convenient.
I also don't own any type of foot powder, I walk barefoot a lot and love a good hot tub, all things that my "class" taught me I would need to do or avoid. YMMV, and I am not saying you don't need a Medic Alert; do what makes you feel comfortable. |

Thank you. | I had the same problem when I ordered my bracelet. I just took it to a local jeweler and they shortened it while I waited. You could also try one of those nylon "sport bands"- MedicAlert offers some, and several other companies offer even nicer ones IMHO. Do a google search for medical ID and see what pops up.
Personally, I think that wearing medical ID is important, and I like the fact that any responder can get all the info about me that they need just by calling MedicAlert. I work (and play) outside a lot, so it's important to me that I can be properly cared for if I have a really bad low or something.

| | Neal -- how funny....I just got my diabetic bracelet yesterday and it's too big too. The company I got mine from said the same thing as yours regarding sizing. I can send mine back in to be sized, but don't want to pay for shipping, so am going to take mine to a jeweler too....mine is beaded though, so hope it's not a problem. My doctor told me I have to wear one, so I'm attempting to be obedient. Good luck in getting yours sized.

Nobody said that I have to wear one, but I would rather have the bracelet because they'll see it when they take a pulse.
But right now, as I type, my bracelet has slipped under my watch band, so no one is going to see it there. I'll bring it past a jewelry store this weekend and see what they say. |
