| | Glucose reading gone bonkers I am Type II. My question is: What causes a reading to rise for no reason at all. This a.m. reading was 110, had coffee with 1 tblsp cream (7 grms) and immediately rose to 202.-- Reading was 125 (took 5 gms of glyburide) had 3/4 cup Bran Flakes w/ 1/2 cup lowfat milk. Reading jumped to 303. Had nothing else to eat. Talked to my doctor - suggested I bring in my meter so they could compare. However, I get the same reading on 3 different meters. I'm at the point where I am almost scared to eat anything. My readings have been pretty good, until today. Thanks for your feedback. Eviitta |

| | | I wish I had an answer for you because I have the same trouble. I have juvenile-onset diabetes and can take the same amount of insulin and eat the same amount of food and one day I'll go into insulin shock (like yesterday) and the next day have it hit 240 (like today). It's very frustrating. Maybe someone else can help because I'd like to know too.

| | | Hi Eviitta,
I'm a T1, so our experiences are a bit different. There's the obvious questions: are you stressed out, less activity, etc and so on.
I find from time to time my carb to insulin ratios change out of the blue. Perhaps it's the earth's rotation or because it's high tide tomorrow morning. No reason - I just have to adjust.
I hope you can get things back into range again soon,
HeatherP

| | | Eviitta,
Welcome to the forums.
Are you controling your Diabetes with just diet and exercise? If so maybe you need to start taking meds. You can only hold off Diabetes so long with diet and execerise. Then they put you on meds. I'm type 1. That was how it worked with me anyway.

As Tony said it could be because you don't take meds to control your blood sugar (or do you?, you haven't mentioned it).
Have you been feeling ill. We found that when the body comes down with cold or some infection or even when fracturing the foot, the initial reaction is high blood sugars. It's like a defence mechanism against the illness. Since my boyfriend is Type1 he has to increase his insulin doses on those days.
The other possibility could be a hidden hypo effect. If you had low BS before those 110 and 125, it could be that you had Somogiy effect. That's when liver starts producing glucose, and this effect lasts for hours rising blood sugar continuously. In our case it could go up to 300 within a couple of hours
Also, blood glucose always goes up within 1 hour after we'd eaten, even in people with no diabetes. But what you had is still a bit high, so perhaps the best would be if you speak to your doctor about your treatment. If it wasn't your glucometer or Somogiy effect or possible cold, then perhaps your treatment need to be adjusted to avoid this in future. |

| | Hello Evita, and welcome!
I'm T2, diet controlled. Yes, BG can jump like this. And will. I hear caffeine can certainly affect it.
You -m-u-s-t- eat. Not eating will just make your BG go even higher. I know because I was ill last autumn, was in excruciating pain, and couldn't even eat. BG went bonkers. After 4 days on water only, I was at 20 (that's approx 360 for you). I was told that because your body doesn't get what it needs for the day, goes into your organs for sugar, thus making your BG rise... and rise too much!
I did obsess for a while with testing. Test before breakfast, then test again but only 2 hours after your meal.
Are you on meds? Insulin? Diet controlled? Do you exercice enough? Are you ill at the moment? Or under a lot of stress? So many things can affect BG... not just food. Would you believe that a huge argument with my husband once made my BG rise up to a whooping 15 (275)?!??
Don't be fooled by 'bran' cereal. Some actually contain lots of sugar... Read the labels carefuly.
Take care!

| | | Eviitta The oral med your taking, glyburide, acts in two ways to control glucose levels. One it makes your body produce more insulin and two makes your body use insulin more effeciently. The one thing about insulin resistance is that it is progressive. So it maybe time to up your meds or change the type of med. So yes it looks like a trip to the Doc for a revaluation.
