| | | What does vomitting do to BG? I don't mean to be gross but I was wondering if you throw up your dinner, do you need to eat more? What if it was four hours later? Will you get low or did your body already absorb some of it?
I'm so confused. I've been throwing up after meals lately. And no I'm not pregnant! My stomach is really bloated all the time. I'm tired. I get dizzy. I was just at the doc last Thursday for this and she said not to worry, it must be some stomach virus or something. I'm confused. But anyway, what to do when I throw up my meal? Is the BG usually ok? Right now mine's at 225!!! But I wanted to know if I should monitor it over night.

| | | Throwing up can many times be the sign of a high BG. If you know you are not throwing up from a high BG then it can be some other illness.
Now, what happens to the carbs that were in that food. Well, if it was 4-5 hours after the meal, then they would have been already absorbed. If it's within 1 hour after a meal, than generally they have probably not be absorbed fully and you could have a low. From 1-4 hours, I'd say they are most likely absorbed unless you ate a high fat meal.
Just another one of those fun guessing games with diabetes and testing more often.

| | | vomit I'll agree to that. If you vomit relatively soon after eating, it would be like not having eaten at all since the food is now out of your stomach. So you would have taked too much insulin and soon find yourself hypo.
When I've been sick (actually sick like the flu) regular coke has always worked wonders. I've been able to keep it down and ease my stomach, plus it gives plenty of carbs!
I know you said you weren't exactly sick when this happens, but its the closest personal experience I have to relate!

| | | When sick and suffering from a gastro intestinal bug, I find diabetes makes it worse. Vomitting has made me go both low and high. I have to test because I just can't guess which is it because I usually feel sooooo ill anyway. I don't eat after I've been sick. I usually stick to liquids for a while.
If you don't have a stomach bug, perhaps you're having something that really doesn't agree with you??! Rhubard makes me throw up within 15 minutes... |

| | | Lex, call your endo. You may have a type of neuropathy in your gut called gastroparesis (sp). It is a type of delayed digestion that can cause you to feel bloated. There are things that can help. It may just be a stomach virus as your doctor suggested, but if it is gastroparesis they can determine it very quickly and give you some relief.
Hope you feel better soon. |

| | | Lex, how long have you been throwing up? If it's been more than a few days, it's likely not viral gastroenteritis and I would call your doc like notme suggested. Are you throwing up after most meals or just dinner? And just with meals or is it...er, spontaneous, for lack of a better word, too?

| | It started last Wednesday. I don't feel sick until I eat, a few hours after I eat actually. I've felt hugely bloated as well and something really isn't right with my digestive system. Not to be gross, but it seems like I always need to go #2 but I just can't. I still have regular BM's, once a day or every other day, but it seems like I just can't get it all out? I know, ewww.
Over the summer when I first started Byetta and Metformin I threw up all the time. After every meal, no fail. Once I went off Metformin and started Amaryl (combined with Byetta) the nausea and vomitting went away. Until now. It feels like that again, where I just can't keep anything down and I get burning headaches.
Sound like a digestive problem then? Thanks so much for the info. I'll call the doc tomorrow.

| | So far no problems with low BGs. I only throw up hours later so I guess my body is absorbing the carbs. I had soup tonight, thought maybe it would be easier on my stomach. NOPE! Threw up again. My head is pounding. What's wrong with me?
I'll be the doc tomorrow.
