When are things going to get right for Eri?
Dangit, she went back to school and I get the call from the nurse...Eri's bgl was 422, I told her to give her 8 units of novolog and to have her drink...I was about 30 minutes away from the school actually attempting to run errands, you know, like, normal life?...so I called back and Eri was HI. I was like...WHAT? Did she take her insulin and drink? Of course. So, I called the endo and got the one CDE...OMGosh...she said I had to be wrong or lying...I was like WHAT? The nurse was right there! She said, well, you signed a contract and YOU'RE supposed to do it. OK, am I supposed to go to school EVERY day w/ the child? So, I pick up Eri and get her home...her bg is down to 450...called the endo's and they told me to give her more insulin, which I did, and to call at 330. OK, fine. I called, still had ketones(mod-high) and she was 430, then got down to 340...she had some soup w/ toast and bolused in and then puked and went up to 493........UGH(she also got her lantus and I gave her more novolog).
Then we watched a movie(Akeelah and the Bee, a favourite of hers)...and I just tested her and she was down to 410...this is driving me CRAZY!
She didn't eat last night...when she went to bed she was 122 last night...woke up like this and not feeling well. The only thing I can think of is, either she is getting a touch of the flu OR a slight infection ...sinus or something.
OK...just had to let that out.
Please pray that she just gets back into control. We're doing everything we can...

Robin, if I am approaching 300, my correction factor (1 unit for 40 points) is terribly off...I actually go a little bit nuts with the insulin inasmuch as I take more than I would recommend anyone take, but I also have "corrective" foods around so when I am normal again, I eat to cover the active insulin.

ANYWAY, at 400 I know 8 units won't do me jack. I'd be taking more like 15, and I'd take three shots in three separate areas to increase absorption (5 units each). And like you did, I drink fluids and drink fluids and drink.

I check at 1 hour...If I am not signifigantly higher, I don't bolus again. If I am, I do. IN any case, I check sugars again in half an hour, and half an hour later (exactly two hours from my three shots). I hope to be under 200 at that point.

Anyway, that's my approach. It can be a bit dangerous, but like I said I do this when I have foods close. Also, I don't eat a danged thing until I am normal. And I mean nothing.

Tell Eri to hang in there.

Eri's Mom, Thank you for making me have a reality check... I was over here feeling sorry for myself about my sonogram and ate a pint of ice cream and at the same time your baby is having these high numbers (Type 1 ) and I could be controlling my sugars better with just diet and exercise forgive me....
I have you both already in my thoughts and prayers for strength and wisedom.... Mucho Hugs....

Does Eri have DP? Have you tried testing her morning basals?

I really hate to hear this. Is it possible her body is insensitive to insulin to some extent?

Robin, I think this would scare me so much, I would homeschool Eri. I can be overprotective and I know it, but that poor baby goes through so much! Seems like she needs to be testing more often, so they can see this coming. I get upset when I am over 200! Eri will be in my prayers tonight.

This thought ran across my mind as well! Not to mention the hassles they've given with you/her with missing school! Homeschooling is an option I would look into.

Yeah, I've actually considered homeschooling her but last year, when she was out for those 3 months, they gave me more of a hard time and sent a tutor. I was so ticked w/ how things were going I asked if it was b/c of the money she brings in(each individual child for that matter).

I don't know WHY she is like this...I seriously thought things were getting on track since she went through the one surgery and then the probe. I mean, I know her bgl's rose a bit bc of the anticipation of the thing, but I was NOT expecting this. Then they tell me she could be held back b/c of missing school, even though I have NEVER missed an absence w/o following it up w/ a med. note, etc...COME ON! Her one teacher is just beyond mean and cold. They think that I must want her w/ me 24/7...yeah, right...I mean I love her w/ all I have, but breathing room is a good thing! (sorry, just a bit frustrated w/ all going on).

Her bgl is now down to 320, just praying I can get it under more control. The ketones are at least under control...she missed her neuro appt. today and it was rescheduled for January. UGH.

I am just so over this, so over them thinking I don't know how to control her and they never seem to take into consideration everything else that is going on w/ her.
I reminded them of puberty and things like that a few times ago in the hospital and they said it wouldn't cause this much of a problem(gee, yet they always say to contact them w/ certain numbers, etc....)...I was told that the puberty years would be like this, but they seem to forget that.
I was thinking that MAYBE, if things just keep going this way, I'll go to FL for a semester of school and see how she does back down there. Honestly, she was never this bad when we lived in FL. All this bad stuff started happening about two weeks after we moved up here.

Robin, please be assured that homeschooling in NY isn't that difficult. You have to file a notice of intent to homeschool, you have to turn in a yearly "lesson plan" and keep track of the minutes that Eri homeschools, and be "competent" to teach your child. Here's a link to an organization that helps out homeschooling families: LEAH, Inc.

When you homeschool, there are a lot of organizations to help you find curricula, you get discounts at all kinds of places (because you are now a "teacher") and it's a great way to bond with your child. People worry about socialization, but I have to say that my kids, at least, are typically more social than kids in public schools, since they aren't around the same people all the time. We go to many activities, we participate in homeschooling field trips, etc. They know more people in the area than kids who see the same kids all day, every day. They are also more accepting of kids with different needs, since they actually get to "see" those kids. In our public schools, all of the special needs and behavioral disorder kids are segregated from the "general population", and hence tend to be mean to those they don't understand. IYKWIM.

Anyhow, it's just an idea. Your idea about going to FL for a semester is a good one too, but do you want to split up the family or would everyone go?

Thanks for that link I'm going to look more into it. I have a meeting w/ her teachers on the 7th...amazingly, the one teacher who is the most mean to her didn't want to be in on the meetings, but I requested her to be there, so she will. (this is her math)
As for her bgl's, it is now down to 78. She feels like crud...I seriously think she has the flu. I was up every 2 hours checking her...took forever to get her down, but at least she is now.

Oh my goodness! Poor thing. (((BIG HUG))) It breaks my heart to hear about the struggle you go through w/Eri. Being responsible for a diabetic child is hard enough without having to fight schools all the time. Does this rollercoaster happen at puberty for everybody?? Even when I am not posting I think of Eri often and pray that she stabilizes soon.
