Wink Diabetes Pointers ;)

So... if you could give a fellow Diabetic advice on how to control Diabetes better, what advice would you give?

My advice (ok, it's probably the most obvious advice) would be to test your blood sugar as much as possible.

Personally speaking, I know that I cannot rely on how I feel, b/c I am just off too often of the time . And how else would we know where we stand if we didn't test? It's especially important for us T1s~ our readings tend to be much more erratic. At least when we test, we can make adjustments when high or low.

Please take a moment and post what you think is helping you to best manage you Diabetes~ thanks

Portion control. If you want a treat, have it. Just have a little bit. I think this is good advice for non-diabetics too!

I set the alarm on my watch for my testing and shot times.

I set an alarm twice a day for Lantus shots, with a picture on the alarm of my lantus pen, and the alarm text says "TAKE LANTUS 7u"

My advice for a newly diagnosed, would be to log test results for the first few months... it REALLY helps and makes you want to make all the numbers as close together as you can (colour code it, get it all green!!)

Basal rate profiling.

I guess just about everybody takes multiple injections of some sort which are divided into basals and boluses. You can test all you want, but it's almost impossible to tell which injection is at fault.

Basal profiling is the process of setting your basal rates to give you a flat line of fasting BGs throughout the day. Of course a flat line is impossible, but a line within target ranges is.

I recently had some very large breakfasts. I kept my bolus ratio the same, and I expected to go high because of all the extra carbs and protein -- I went hypo instead. I also decided to be more agressive in dieting so I cut back on my breakfast portions -- I went high. After doing a basal profile for the morning -- skip breakfast and test hourly -- I determined my BGs were rising 5pts(90 US). After 2 days of adjustments my BGs were within range. I now feel confident that I can controll my sugars much much better. One big variable has been eliminated. Of course occaisional follow-ups are needed to verify.

Don't expect everyone else to pick up the pieces. Don't blame what's in your food. Don't sit and complain that your BGs are high and you're getting fat when you could be exercising instead. Don't demand special allowances. Don't blame 'Big [insert corporation]' for your problems.

With diabetes, the buck firmly starts and ends with you - so the advice I'd give to anyone with diabetes is 'take responsibility for yourself'. If you can't do that, if you insist on blaming everything from pharmaceutical companies to artificial sweeteners to carbs to MSG for your problems, you will not survive.

If you think you shouldn't, you're probably right.
