Question How Much?

How much are you supposed to have to bring yourself out of a Hypo?
I was always told to have 2 pieces of toast and a glass of milk (or mug!) but I do find that brings my bgl too high afterwards - I have tried cuttin it down as well but still find it rises too high.

I was then told that to have something sweet before the tosat and milk as they take quite a while to get into the system - is this why is rises so much after?

I know there have been a few threads about hypos recently - and sorry if this has already been answered in one of them...

Thanks for any info.

I do 15gms of fast acting carbs, typically non-fruit juice.

I was told to have 15g of fast carbs, like glucose tablets, wait 15 minutes and test your BG. If it's still low, have another 15g and test in another 15 minutes. Two slices of toast and a glass of milk is probably around 45g of carbs. How soon after you eat that do you test your BG?

For bad lows I was told to follow the fast acting carbs with something containing protein/fat. So maybe a small juice box followed by peanut butter & crackers, or cheese & crackers.

It's suppose to be 15 grams, wait 15 minutes. I use 30 grams and wait 20 minutes though.

I usually wait about 15-20 mins before I test again - its usually up to about 6 or so by then.. but then it creeps up even more lol

1mug/glass of milk is 15 gms so that is more then enough to treat a hypo.
All the bread is doing is keeping you high for ever and day Depending on the bread you are using if you ate the bread as well as drank the milk you are consuming between 45 - 50 carbs which is a meal in it's self. I do find milk good for treating a low but quickest action is glucose tablets.

I agree with SueM. If I have a small glass of milk, it is more than enough to bring me out of a hypo of about 45-55. Two pieces of toast would take me well into the 200 range. I suppose it also depends on the type of bread, but either way I would go very high. Non-fat milk has a LOT of sugar in it.
