So What's Normal Anyway?!!

Does anyone know what a non-diabetic after meal reading would be? How bout non-diabetic fasting?

I haven't had a reading over 110 in some time after a meal, and my fastings have been 86-99 and i'm feeling a little frisky considering i'm not on meds.

Can a type 2 lose enough weight to the point where they can pretty much eat whatever the heck they want (w/out binging of course)? Can a diagnosis be reversed? Was is really possible that Doc sent Marty McFly back to the future?

These are all things i need to know.

.....ready for y'all to bring me back to reality.

I have a friend who lost over 160 pounds with By-pass surgery. She has not had what I would consider a Diabetic level since she lost the weight. She doesn't eat what she wants, since the surgery, but she always has candy in her mouth, eats sugary icecream, puddings, etc.

Thumbs up

Congrats on having such great results.

To answer your question, once you have diabetes, you always have diabetes. Some people can control their levels, as you have without meds, and have non-diabetic readings. Once you give up the good control and begin eating like you used to and not exercising as much, your numbers will reflect your less strict control.

I found this info on normal non-diabetic blood sugar levels on line:

"What are normal blood sugar levels? Fasting (blood sugar level after not eating for 8 hours) blood sugar should be between 70 milligrams per deciliter to 100 mg/dL. Your blood sugar should not be above 100 at any given time; If it is, this suggests a pre-diabetes condition. A level of 100 - 199 suggests prediabetes. A level over 200 suggests that you have either Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes."

You should be very proud of all you've managed to accomplish. Keep up the good work!

Linda

I understand how you feel...it's hard always having to look at what you're eating and then feel guilty when you slip up or when your readings aren't what you think they should be...but you do get used to it. Even on medicine, my readings aren't as good as yours, so you're doing great.

I think the best way to look at things is this way: We can't change what we've done or not done to develop this disease...we have it and now we have the choice of pretending it doesn't exist and facing the consequences, or meeting it head-on each day and, hopefully by meeting it head-on, we'll live a longer and healthier life than we would have before being diagnosed.

I know my life is MUCH healthier and I feel I will live longer by the concessions I make health-wise with my diabetes than I would have if I had continued my self-destructive pre-diabetic path. You hang in there!

I'm shooting for:

Fasting - under 110

Pre-Meal - 80s-90's

Post Meal - under 120 or so

Near as I can tell, those are close to "normal" for healthy non-diabetic people on a "good" diet.

Soda drinking, potato chip eating, non-diabetic couch potatoes probably run a bit higher )

Wow really?!?! That is very interesting... I start to feel low if I am anywhere under 4.5mmolL (~80).

Ok, I wasn't going to post to this thread, cause there are numerous factors involved which could cause variances from one person to another, etc., but I did want to share the ADA's previous standards for fasting & "normal" blood glucose levels. They used to be 80-120, which seems reasonable. I'm not sure why they changed it the way they did, because I hear of many folks (including loved ones without Diabetes who occasionally test on my meter), who say if they're 80 or 90, they too, feel somewhat shaky!

My hubby is one of those people. I've tested him at various times, even after having had sodas, etc., and his levels remain pretty decent (i.e. no higher than 106 or so, ballpark). However, he sometimes gets headaches if he waits too long to eat.

113 seems like a decent number to me. Maybe I'm misunderstanding (or, maybe the ADA shouldn't have changed their standard levels )?

I took a 3 day trip to Florida on someone else's dime last week. Let's just say that for the first time since being dx'd I "let loose" a little.

Can't believe the ground I lost in my BG avg's. I'm still not back to where I was pre-trip. I'm struggling to get back to the numbers posted above.

My numbers are still good, but they *were* GREAT. Now I have to work my @#$ off to get back to to where I was. (current 7 day avg is 106, pre-trip it was 92!)

Still, all in all, it was almost worth it....
