Patient Doctor Communication

To improve communication between patients and doctors, we at New England College of Optometry are gathering information in order to advance the future technology. We greatly appreciate your participation in the following survey.

1. How easy do you find it to contact your doctor either via phone or email? (1 being the easiest and 5 the most difficult)
2. How often do you communicate with your optometrist?
3. Would you find it helpful to sign in on a personalized data base only viewable by your doctors to keep a daily/weekly log of your blood sugar levels and other information regarding your vision? Why?
4. If yes, how likely would you use it?
5. What information do you find important to communicate to your optometrist?

Thank you for your input,
New England College Of Optometry, Boston

1. How easy do you find it to contact your doctor either via phone or email? 5 (1 being the easiest and 5 the most difficult)
2. How often do you communicate with your optometrist? 2x year
3. Would you find it helpful to sign in on a personalized data base only viewable by your doctors to keep a daily/weekly log of your blood sugar levels and other information regarding your vision? YesWhy?Sounds wonderful for both parties involved as far as education in real time
4. If yes, how likely would you use it? Very
5. What information do you find important to communicate to your optometrist? It's the other way around... I prefer he understands my condition(s) and asks appropriate questions... mine does this already, and I'll weep the day he retires, he's so thorough...

Good luck with your project... sounds good for all of us.

My answers are:

1. My doctors are all extremely busy, so it's pretty difficult to get in direct contact with them. Messages have to be filtered through impatient, insensitive and often rude office staff. Very frustrating. On a scale of 1-5, I would say 6!
2. I only communicate with my optometrist once a year at routine exams.
3. I would find it VERY helpful to use such a system, particularly if it was available to all of my doctors. They usually want access to each other's information which is a hassle for everyone involved.
4. I would probably use it once or twice a month.
5. All information regarding Diabetes care and medications is important to relay to the optometrist.

Good luck

1. How easy do you find it to contact your doctor either via phone or email? (1 being the easiest and 5 the most difficult)

***5, i can get nurses sometimes but mostly get voicemail, and never get to speak with the doc herself

2. How often do you communicate with your optometrist?

***once a year at my regular eye exam

3. Would you find it helpful to sign in on a personalized data base only viewable by your doctors to keep a daily/weekly log of your blood sugar levels and other information regarding your vision? Why?

4. If yes, how likely would you use it?

***if i was having a problem figuring out the cause of high sugars etc

5. What information do you find important to communicate to your optometrist?

Info refers to France not USA
1. How easy do you find it to contact your doctor either via phone or email? (1 being the easiest and 5 the most difficult)
1 (Have diabetologists mobile phone number)
2. How often do you communicate with your optometrist? (opthalmologist?) once per year
3. Would you find it helpful to sign in on a personalized data base only viewable by your doctors to keep a daily/weekly log of your blood sugar levels and other information regarding your vision? Why?
Could be useful, regional hospital (Toulouse) already trialing system of communicating BS levels by phone /PDA which may become standard in area. Other medical info becoming available within next year to all doctors via national system( carte vitale and patien pin number.)
4. If yes, how likely would you use it? Would use BS database. Think idea of patient database excellent, hope it will work.
5. What information do you find important to communicate to your optometrist? Fortunately none so far but would mention any problems with vision, doctor asks for HBA1C

1- Contacting doctor by phone is simple, but must do it through the doctor's nurse. The doctor won't answer the phone. Email is not provided.

2- 1x yearly for yearly ophthalmologist visit.

3- Not useful (I know this isn't what you probably want to hear). Doctors don't have the time nor care to look at a person's glucose log unless they have no family life and the patient is paying them out of pocket to look at their logs. Insurance companies will not pay for a doctor to review a person's weekly glucose logs. The doctor will look at the latest records during the exam. It's up to the patient to review their own logs and adjust their own insulin once they've got the experience.

4- I'd use it, but only if it provided more than pretty charts, statistics, and graphs. I have yet to see a system provide more than that.

5- My ophthalmologist asks how my HbA1c is as well as my most recent blood glucose reading. (This is to confirm that my eyes aren't sloshing around with glucose, since that would obviously throw off the prescription!)

1. How easy do you find it to contact your doctor either via phone or email? If you are asking about my optometrist, I have no idea, as I have never seen the same optmetrist twice.
2. How often do you communicate with your optometrist? In the past, only when I need new glasses, every 1-3 years. Now: never, as I get prescriptions from an opthamologist.
3. Would you find it helpful to sign in on a personalized data base only viewable by your doctors to keep a daily/weekly log of your blood sugar levels and other information regarding your vision? Why? No, definitely not. I don't think my doctors even need to see my daily BS, nor do I think they would want to. I can keep my own records, thank you. Aren't you aware that blood glucose meters likely have an onboard log and often are downloadable to PCs? There are also online programs available. Why replicate the effort?
4. If yes, how likely would you use it? N/A
5. What information do you find important to communicate to your optometrist? For what purposes I need glasses, so that I can get an appropriate prescription.

Hello I only see my eye Dr once a yr. My insurance will pay for yearly eye exams only. I never give him my bs results. I don't think he needs them. He can look in my eyes and see if anything is wrong.
