Big Resistance Problem.... Need Help ASAP!

I went to the doc the other day and my A1C was 6.8. I am on Lanuts and Apidra. He wanted to add Metformin to my regiment. I had DKA last year as a result of taken Metformain all by itself. He didn't see any problem with me taking it again.

I stratred taking it the other day and instantly my insulin resistance skyrocketed. No mounter how many hundreds of units of Apidra (300-600 units) I injected it would not budge.

I went to the hospital and the doctor was like "your blood sugar is 118 what do you want form us"? I said it took me like 600 units for me to get it from 280 to 140. He had no answers for me and told me to see my endocrinologist. Well I can't go see him because it's a 3 day weekend.

What the **** is going on? My resistance went nuts. It takes hundgreds of units to drop it 30 -60 units.

Has anyone heard of this before? What should I do? I have a BS of 300 right now and injected 300 units to drop it.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

That's new to me, pilot. I take metformin with good results. Perhaps other users of metformin know more along this line.

Are you T-1 or T-2?

Jetpilot with uncontrolled diabetes.....BIZAAR!

Metformin does not cause DKA or increase resistance.

What and how much are you eating to cause you to go to 300?

Are you type 2 or type 1 with insulin resistance?

The day I started Metformain my control went to sh*t and my insulin basiclly stopped working. I am type 2.

Metformin in some cases does contribute to DKA.

I am @ 300 because my insulin is not working!!!!

I injected 300 units and 1 hour later it rose 30 points to 330. So now I am at 330 and just injected another 200 units.

My pancreatic output was 1.8 last weak. So that's within normal parameters.

Doctors SUCK! I can't believe they sent me home!!!

Your A1c was pretty good on Lantus and Apidra. Why are you changing that regime?

I am not sure what you expected the doctor in the ER to do Jet. Have you considered stopping the Metformin and go back on your Lantus/Apidra routine until Tuesday?

I did stop my Metformin 2 days ago and the resistance is still there.

I wanted the doctor in the ER to at least do some blood/urine lab work.

Well I just got back from the emergency room again and they had no answers for me. They did say..." You took how much insulin and your still walking?" Sooooo no one can figure this out. Thye observed me for 3 hours to make sure I didn't crash which I didn't and they said you should not be alive and I replied... yeah I know that's the problem.

As far as the insulin being bad.... I used Apidra from 3 different sources. I tired 5 different bottles from 2 different pharmacies, and some samples from my Endocrinologist he gave me when I visit.

This has something to d owith the Metformin because this is the only change I made to my regiment. And the same day I started taking my Metformin I lost control.

Have you by chance tried Humalog or Novolog in place of Apidra? I don't know the answer to this, but Apidra was the worst of the 3 when it came to bringing my numbers down. I used more Apidra then the other 2. Just a thought.

OK so you have changed the Rapid have you changed the Lantus?
If both ok do you take Lantus once or twice a day?
If once/day then talk to your endo about splitting the dosage.
Many find once/day does not give them coverage.

Wow. Resistance of that magnitude is not unheard of, but it doesn't just happen like that.

How much were you normally taking a day? Metformin lowers resistance, but if you think the metformin did this somehow, get someone to call your endo on the golf course. Cripes, you don't want to be taking that much and suddenly have normal resistance again.

Well guys.... thanks for the help. I did go to the emergency room again as I was scared and confused. They pumped a liter of saline in me and monitored my blood sugar. Upon arrival my BS was 375. After the liter and the time lapse the sugar came down to 160. The doc sent me home with no answers.

The next day I had been off the Metformin for 24 hours and my resistance/absorbtion rate started going back to normal. Today... the 3rd day it is now normal again.

No one has any answers for me as far as what happened with the Metformin and why it changed the absorbtion rate /resistance. But I won't be taking it again any time soon.

Metformin can fascilitate the onset of DKA. Go to the website and read the medical information included with the drug.

As I stated before I am type II and my pancrease has normal output.

Thanks for the help!
