Pregnancy

Hi,

Anyone care to share experience about pregnancy, type 1'ers especially. What is the risk of complications both to the mother and baby and what do you have to watch out for.

Hello....I've been t1 since 1991 and I've since had 2 children, 1 in 2000 and 1 in 2002. I was on mdi with my first child and kept under tight control during the whole pregnancy. You see the doctor a lot and you don't want the baby to get too big, that's one of the biggest concerns. My second child I was on the insulin pump which was better because you had more freedom, especially with those cravings. I had great pregnancies with no complications. They induced me 2 weeks early with my first because they were afraid he may get too big but my daughter came 3 weeks early on her own. My son though was diagnosed with type 1 when he was 4 but he's adjusted well and is now 6 and is pumping.

I've had five children... All on MDI. None were over 7#5oz and all are healthy to this day. (Okay, one has a different autoimmune disease, but I don't count that as anything but chance, since she is healthy except when her disease flares every year or so.)

Eat right, count your carbs, adjust your dosages as needed, check your bgs more often, and enjoy pregnancy.

Personally, I don't allow induction unless absolutely necessary for the baby's sake. Only one of mine was induced and that was because she was 2 weeks overdue and it was the worst experience of my life... (Of course, I am also one of those "crunchy" people who don't believe in medicated labors or c-sections, so don't listen to me if you're of the belief that OBs know best.)

Oh, and breastfeed...it helps the pregnancy weight go away and it is so very good for the baby!
