My poor son

I had to take my son to the emergency room last night. He has type 1, as I do, and he had a stomach bug yesterday. The thing that scared me was his blood sugar was in the 400's just about all day long and no matter how much he bolused it wouldn't go down. I checked his site and it seemed fine. Then later in the day he was dry heaving and his stomach was in terrible pain and he was having a hard time breathing. First thing I thought of was DKA!! He was rushed right in to our local er and they wanted us to go to the children's hospital in Boston. We got there and only ended up staying a few hours and then he was released.

I've been diabetic for 16 years and have never once been admitted to the hospital for anything. My son has already been admitted once this year for a stomach virus. Why is it kids get admitted so easily? Or is it I've just been really lucky not to have a stomach virus? Poor kid although he loved the ride in the ambulance going to children's hospital. He thought it was the greatest thing!!

I dunno! Is his BG doing good now?? If not, take him back and DEMAND they take proper care of him!! I hope he IS dong well now!!

I think some people just get worse off when they are sick. I get admitted without fail pretty much every time anything goes haywire with my stomach. I just dehydrate so darn quickly. Hope your son feels better soon!

Yes, he's fine now. Must've just been a 24 hour thing. But every time he gets a stomach virus he has to go to the hospital (I should say both of us). It's tough enough to go through it yourself but to see your child go through it, it really sucks!

Glad to hear he's doing better! You don't mention how his ketones were. I've always heard that children are more variable, so you should monitor closely when they are sick. Also test for ketones when they're sick or anytime they're vomiting.

When he initially got sick he didn't pee for me to test them and it took 2 bags of saline to get him to pee. His ketones came back low so he wasn't in dka, thank god!! That's always been the problem, because he's so dehydrated, he doesn't pee so I can test the ketones.

The Precision Xtra meter will let you test for blood ketones.

I know...We have one but insurance doesn't cover the strips so unfortunately we haven't used it. Insurance should cover it though

I did laugh about the ambulance ride being the greatest thing!
It sounds as if he has his priorities right for a youngster

I just found a website that sells them for $36.95 for a box of 10 and goes lower if you buy more than 3. It is Diabetic Promotions - Discount Diabetic Supplies - Complete Online Catalog. Thank goodness for FSA account through my employer. I had totally forgotten about that until I went searching on the internet. I'm so glad I joined this forum. Makes for a better life of the diabetic!!! Thanks everone.

Cathy, sorry to hear your son had to go to the hospital. Glad he's alright...It can get sooo hard to keep sugars in range when the body's fighting an illness.

Sorry he had to go through that with his stomach bug, but hope he's back up & running soon!

I'm so sorry for your son's illness.
Has he had his immune system tested?
I'm really glad he enjoyed the ambulance trip. Little Trooper!

It's good to up the insulin intake when necessary to keep the bg down. Keeping well hydrated is also important when the bg is high. Glad he's doing better...

That is a great little meter in times of possible DKA. Certainly better than the ketostix. I have about a thousand ketone test strips for the Precision Xtra that I'll certainly never use before they expire.
