| | | The perfect low fix Ever had those nights where you end up staying awake all night and drinking an entire carton of orange juice because of continual lows? Maybe you haven't, but I have, especially after intense exercise. The other night I was browsing through my pantry in search of something fast other than soda or orange juice. It hit me! Maple syrup! The stuff is perfect for lows. It only took a little more than 1/8 of a cup (1 oz) to do the trick for me. Finally I have found a way to correct a terrible low without bloating my stomach with liquid! Just thought I would share because surely there is someone else here that has had the same unpleasant experience...

| | Yes I hate when that happens. It usually keeps me from exercising like I should. That's good to hear and I'm sure it's a quick fix too. Thanks for info!! |

Do you not eat something substantial after your initial sugar fix? If you suspect it's going to keep falling, try some longer acting foods: toast, PB, and banana.

| | I generally don't need to eat much to correct for a low. I keep Starbursts by my bed and can eat about four or five to correct a low. A small handful of plain animal crackers do the job also. I can't even imagine chugging maple syrup....LOL
Hey.....whatever floats your boat Peter!!!! If it works it works. |

| | | Doesn't anyone here use glucose tablets? They measure exactly 4g of sucrose. I also eat something like a slice or two of cheese for the "staying power" of the fat it contains. If you stayed away from starches you wouldn't have that extreme a problem.

I hate those things. If I have to eat sugar, I want something I'll at least enjoy. I agree with the cheese being a SW Wisconsin native myself (if u ever want to chat, enable your personal messages ).
I don't totally agree with the starchy comment. I do agree it's a variable that needs to be accounted for, but I can deal with most foods satisfactorily.

I don't like glucose tabs, either.
My standby is a 15 carb juice box with a peanut butter chaser. Works like a charm.

| | | IMO, it's unwise to treat severe lows with food. Glucose tabs work much faster, are more predictable and come in many brands and flavors.

| | Are we talking REAL maple syrup (the expensive stuff) or Aunt Jemima? The real thing is divine, I mean I couldn't drink a glassful but an ounce or so.... mmmmmm.
(What... I didn't get to be a 240 pound diabetic for nothing, you know. )
Now the cheap stuff I think might be a little nasty. |
