Does anybody find that things constantly go infected when they get a cut or anything? and is this due to high blood sugars?
I'm finding this even if I am keeping the area clean and dry....

| | | Nope, not had any problems with infections, but it seems to take 2 - 3 times longer to heal. Are you having high bg's? Do high bg's increase the risk of infections, probably. Some bacteria feed on sugars. So increase the sugars and they will multiply faster. Look for an anti-bacterial cream to put on cuts and see if it cuts down on the infections. Keeping bg's in the recomended range should help to cut down on infections. Don't try to keep them in the low end of the range though, your own cells need more sugars to fight off infections.

| | | It has been my experience that as long as I am in good control I have fewer infections. If I am higher I will get more infections. This is normal for us.
For creams to help me I have two that work extremely well. One is Bactroban, which is prescribed. The other is simply Desitin diaper cream. The normal Desitin not the one with the blue container or label. My Dermatologist says both work great. Actually I have healed up twice as fast using the Desitin cream than the Bactroban. But both work great for my allergy breakouts onmy arms and legs.

| | | For the past two years, I have been keeping my blood sugars in a perfectly normal range - fasting of about 4 (72 in the USA) ranging to 5.4 (97) two hours after eating. In all that time, I have not had a cold or flu bug, and cuts and sores heal much faster than they used to. I'm convinced that this is the result of normalizing my blood sugars, as I used to get a couple of bouts of flu and/or colds every winter.

I feel like I'm having the same problem. Even though my worst A1c (since being Dx'ed) was 5.4. it takes longer to heal than it once did.

| | gahhh... your worst was 5.4... my best has been 7.3.. an that was very near to dxd... they have gone from bad to worse since...

| | | I had a fungal infection on my hands that took two rounds of antibiotics to clear up. It looked like poison ivy but with very small bumps that itched like crazy. I think I picked it up working in the garden. The Doc told me that I would be more likely to get infections now. I have noticed that I take a lot longer to heal. I have started to really pay attention no even minor injuries. A brother-in-law lost both legs before he died of complications from diabetes. |

| | VGray, I've even given up walking barefeet outside... that should tell you how seriously the matter is to me. It's something that is part of my routine now; to be careful. Oh well...
