Those free snacks from the red cross....

Today I donated blood. Second time I've done it. The problem is, they always want you to carb up. They were out of water afterward, so they told me to have juice. I also had a donut. I don't know whether I'm suppose to bolus for this stuff or not. Isn't the point to replace the glucose you lose when donating? I bolused for half, and was over 200 next time I tested. So I guess I do need to bolus for it...?

It is to bring your energy back up so you don't
pass out but normally non-diabetics give blood
so that isn't usually a problem. You didn't say
how long after that you tested. Yes, you should
bolus to bring it down to (160/9.0 ), then it should
go down the rest to your Good number. Unless of
course, it doesn't bother you being at the level for
a while.

Anyways, you're Lucky. I've asked about giving
blood for yrs. But "No, I'm sorry. You are on Insulin".
My Daughter was eager to give blood also when she
turned 17. Again: "I'm sorry but you are under 110 lbs.
(Not by much). So my Hubby and Son just donate.
I believe they give cookies and milk over here.

Thanks For Giving. It's Always Much Needed.

I tried to change the 160/9.0 to 150/8.0 but
the "edit" wasn't accepted. :P

I don't have a response for the bolus thing, I just wanted to say.... "Good for you"!!

I so wish I could give blood, but I can't. We had a Blood Run here about 15 years ago and I went in with the rest of our friends and my husband to give blood and I can't give.... EVER! I have a Mitral Valve Prolapse and in order to even have my teeth cleaned, or anything consisting of bleeding, I have to take an immense amount of antibiotics. So they told me nope, and not ever.

Great for giving blood. as for the snacks, if you are worried, just bring your own. Tell them you are dieting and are counting your carbs. i've given blood and just walked out but a pint is not much of the total

You're replacing blood volume. Yes you need glucose, and all you need is a little bit of insulin/ to upregulate glut4.
I'm not 110 pounds but I'm working on it; I last weighed in at 108.
