Blood pressure meds to protect kidneys?

Even though I probably don't need to continue taking my blood pressure meds, my PCP told me to continue them anyway. He said that they work to protect the kidneys in people with D. I don't understand the connection. Has anyone else heard of this?

Your kidneys are very sensitive to elevated blood pressure and fail if it persists too long.

I wouldn't fight him on this, I would continue the medications.

Your BP medication may be an ace-inhibitor, which not only helps lower BP, but also adds kidney protection. I take Enalapril, and when my doc started me on it for HTN, I wasn't diabetic, but she said with my diabetic family history, this would also give me the added benefit of kidney protection should I become a diabetic.

I've heard about this also. I take blood pressure meds. pravacol, metoprolol,,cozaar, norvasc, and the list goes on. which one do you take that helps the kidneys, because I think I stopped taking that one.

Found this on the Avapro website:

"In people with type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure, Avapro is also prescribed to stave off damage to the kidneys, often delaying the need for dialysis and a kidney transplant."

It seems that this is similar to an ace-inhibitor, though it's an angiotension II receptor antagonist, supposed to help improve blood flow and keep blood vessels from narrowing.

That pretty much sums it up. Thanks for finding that, Linda.

Many people have to take more than one BP medication to get good control. I took my ace-inhibitor for 8 years before my blood sugar started creeping up and doc then added HCTZ 12.5 mg....it made me go very low, and now I take it every other day. I have to say I really do have really good BP now though, usually 90-105/60-70.

there are two types of (related) BP meds that help the kidney :ACE amd ARB. Some people get a dry cough with the ACE, if so then the ARB is for you

Another thing to note ti shte effects are additive on BP: you can add an ARB to an ACE and get lower numbers

Me too my blood pressure is 116 over 82 and my pulse is 85.

I don't know how bad this is but I was put on Lisinopril 5mg.

I wonder if this drug has any kidney protecting abilities?

I have been when in an agravated state 133 over 88 and my pulse 87.

Yes, Lisinopril is also an ace-inhibitor.

my blood pressure has always been a little on the low side but I take atenolol to protect my kidneys. I've had a bypass and I have neuropaphy in my feet so I don't need anymore complications.
