Tried experiment tonight with food and wine

I was diagnosed a little over 2 months ago with type 2...I have been rock solid on managing BG levels since then...barely going over 100 2 hours after a meal. I have been reading a lot about alcohol and its effects on BG levels. Tonight…I had the craving bad…My one weakness in the world…Mexican food…Chips…Fajitas…and all the other good stuff…(however..no rice this time, but I did eat a bunch of chips and 2 tortillas with my fajitas)…Checked 30 minutes after…bg was at 126….hour later 144…drank a glass of red wine…checked 30 minutes later at 130…30 minutes again…118 and now several hours later…98..
Yes…I realize this is not a wise choice to do everyday..but I wonder if and when the cravings come…could this be a way to keep BG levels out of the danger zone.
I am still learning what I can an can't do. This was the riskiest move I have made yet...but sometimes you have to give into the weakness...

Good management on a regular basis means that the occasional stray will be better tolerated. It also helps if you eat food in the correct order. I just heard blue corn is suppose to be less of a problem than white or yellow, I plan on testing that out.

I drink red wine at bedtime a few nights a week, which has really help raise my HDL cholesterol.

If i'm going to have something "carby," I'll have a shot of apple cider vinegar with 2-3 pkts of splenda and water just before I eat..it really does cut down the 2 hr reading...however, If I over consume carbs one day, the next day's fasting is always a little higher. There are also vinegar capsules available at health food stores (the vinegar shots aren't very palatable). If I'm out in an restaurant, i'll order a salad with vinegarette dresing before my meal to help as well.

No. Alcohol can help control your basal sugar release but not the sugar you input. It slows liver release of sugar; it doesn't make insulin more effective. If you assume (read my sig) that one drink takes one hour to be processed by your liver, the effect doesn't last all that long.

Still, I'm glad you enjoyed a fine meal

Exactly... Your liver dumps glucose, which raises your bg value. When you drink, your liver is busy processing the alcohol and doesn't release the amount of glucose (if any) that it usually does.

I don't know about this theory (with me!)...last night we ate at a French restaurant. My meal wasn't too carby...but lot's of wine.

Let's see. I had a medium roll (fresh from the oven...yum) let's generously call that 45 carbs. Then I had a salad with a little fried goat cheese. Not much there, but let's give it a 15 carbs.

Then I had duck breast, sliced. Small bit of potatoes underneath (I'll generously give that 45...but too much), sauteed veggie shreds.

Two glasses of wine.

Took 7 units of Humalog (a lot for me...I usually need less than 4 units at a meal)...waited a few hours and was 225 so I took another 2 units.

3:30 a.m. I was still in the two hundres, so I took another 2 units. 5:30 a.m. hadn't dropped, so I took 2 more. Slept late til 8 a.m. (after all that night testing!...) was 116 when I woke up.

Food wise, I didn't eat an outrageous amount. But, more than I normally do. That red wine really kept my numbers up. Or, the fat from the duck suspended the numbers. (The duck was not very fatty...but I've heard duck is overall a fat-ladened food) It was my first duck! I've avoided for years.

I always seem to run high at night after having wine with dinner. So, I'm not like the rest of you...
