A1c

Dr. says I may be LADA and waiting on my blood work to get back from the lab(GAD,Islet cells, C-peptide, Insulin level, Chem 8). Can someone tell me what the normal range for these test are? I did however get my A1c: 6.9 up from a 6.4. Dr. still has not put me on any medicine or insulin. It is getting harder to control(am having occasional spikes of 300's when I eat too many carbs). Any way, at what A1c should i begin to worry about my health? My A1c was @ 8.5 when i was having symptoms and wen to the dr. (blurred vision, excess thirst & urination)

if you're hitting the 300's i think you need to be on meds.....also,the fact that your a1c has increased also screams out for meds! if your dr. will not start you on meds, get a different dr! he thinks you may be LADA yet didn't put you on insulin! get another dr!!!!! trish

Upper limit for a normal A1c is often quoted as 6.2%. In the UK diabetics are advised to keep it below 7%. Personally I aim to keep it below 6.2% so I'm hoping to get it down a bit next time. The spikes are not good though. You could hold off on meds if you change your diet radically but unless you have a good reason not to start on insulin there seems little point in not doing so. Then you can eat what you like and get your A1c down

American Society of Endocrinologists suggest keeping under 7.0. Other docs may suggest less.
My last A1c was 6.1 and Endo marked it excellent.

I think the AACE recomends <6.5%, it is the ADA that usees <7%

"For instance, the American Diabetes Association recently changed its recommended A1c from under 8% to 7% or below. Meanwhile, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) recommends an even lower number of less than 6.5%."
