| | | And you wonder why they call it "practicing" medicine. You need to let the doctor know that you want a meter. You have to test just to know what is going on with the meds. I just don't understand where some of these doctor's heads are at.

| | Met shouldn't send you hypo, at least according to the hype. A few on here have experienced the 60's, but seriously, that's child's play to someone on insulin.
I'd want you to test, especially after meals to see how you react to different foods. This is why so many go off track. They have no feedback and assume things are working. Also, how does anyone know you won't progress fast. Many do.
Another dumb-***!

| | | I'm on Met too and test at least 4 times a day. My 14 day average (which I know cause I got a meter) is 102.6. Okay my A1c is not where it should be but I was only DX'ed 8-9 weeks ago. But xMenace rightly says, how will you know where you stand with various foods if you don't test. As I said I test 4 times a day, but if I eat something new/different I'll test 2 & 4 hours after eating to see how it went.
I have been told that Hypos are very unlikely when taking Met, the lowest I have been so far is 75 and I really like it down there!
I suggest talking to your Doc and asking for a meter, he probably gets the for free from companies like Bayer (the do in Ireland).

| | | I'm sorry but I have to ask. Why aren't you requesting a referral to an endocrinologist? If you live around Federal Way I can recommend one.
Unfortunately most GP's only know about D from what they read in the Med Journals. That came from my GP right before he referred me to an endo. |

WDYT? | Yep! that is so tipical of a GP treating us as they seem to think that diabetes are easy to treat and thay don't want to give you a referal to a endo. AGGGUUHH!!!!

| | | You should be fine on the metformin hypo-wise. I have went a little low, but only because I skipped a meal or exercised way more than usual without eating.
My doc only wanted me to check once a day, fasting. I told him I preferred to check several times a day and he wrote me a script for 100 strips/25 days (the maximum my insurance will cover for T2 not on insulin), saying whatever i'm doing must be working well, as my A1cs were stable.
I can't stress how important it is to test, esp. with meals, so you can learn what to eat and what to avoid. Also, diabetes is progressive and if you only go every 6 months or so for an A1C, how will you know if your blood sugars start to trend upwards. If you test daily, you'll know early enough to either make changes or medicine adjustments...otherwise, you could have problems several months and not know it.
Bottom line, it's YOUR health, and its you who will suffer any complications, not your doctor. Find out what your insurance covers strip-wise, then get your doc to write them for you. Most GPs just expect that we T2s don't care enough to take care of ourselves...many here have certainly proven them wrong!

| | | All I'm gonna say is..............TEST! TEST! TEST!
Testing is the only way you'll know which foods you can eat without a big spike in blood sugars and which foods you'll need to avoid.
