Almost missed my Lantus

I fell asleep sitting up in my recliner and did not wake until 3:30 am. At that time, I realized I had not had my 11pm Lantus. My BS was 170, so I wasn't sure what I should do, so I took about 2/3 of my regular injection,......I was thinking if I took the regular dose, there would be too much in my system at 11pm today, but if I didn't inject, it would keep going up. I stayed up for about 2 hours, to make sure it wasn't a mistake, but was at 110 at 8:30 am. This is the best fasting number I have had in many months! I have been having very good daytime numbers, but my fasting has been between 140 and 170 (more often the higher) for a very long time. I have tried all the suggestions to lower it, but nothing works. I have found if I normally inject at 11, wake before 4 my numbers are good, but always by 7 they are high again. Normally I inject at 11, but do not go to sleep for at least a couple hours after that, just wondering if I should maybe take my Lantus even later than I normally do. Guess I could try.

Penny, when I was on Lantus or Levemir and I was waking up too high I would increase my night time dose by one unit at a time. That usually took care of the morning high. Of course if I was waking up too low I would decrease by one unit. Of course YMMV.

This is sort of what my doctor said to do, only he said increase it 3 units every 3 days. It helped some, I was having fastings close to 200.....but I am up to 95 units a day, and he said up to 100 units. I decided to slow down until I see him again. Two reasons....my stomach keeps getting bigger (and I am eating less, exercising more) and my insurance is so hard to deal with, I am afraid I will run out before I can get more.

Hi Penny,

The same happened to me! I fell asleep without my night injection and woke up at around 4. I injected part of the dose then and woke up with a much better blood sugar reading than usual. (always have problems with my morning readings) I also felt so much better than i usually feel in the morning. I had a clear head. Oh what a difference it makes when you don't start your day feeling ill... I'm now considering just setting the alarm and inject at that time every night. It's probably got something to do with the Dawn Phenomenon...

I have missed my Lantus a few times by either being asleep or just forgetfulness. I take mine as a split dose 6am and 6pm. I have an alarm on my mobile phone and also one on my computer for both doses so I don't forget. Never missed one since I started with the alarms. It can be so easy to forget the basal shot.

Wow, I only use a total of 12-15 units a day, so 1 unit at a time worked for me. Three units would have probably made me crash!!
