I need some advice.

Here's the background:
My step-dad has been type 2 for 20+ years. He's been on insulin for 6. He takes lantus and humalog and does not carb count, he uses the sliding scale. I have to say, he's mastered the sliding scale. He can at this point look at any food and know exactly how much humalog to take. He is not willing to learn carb counting; he hates change...I love him, but he is a 67 year old stubborn German!
He and my mom learned about D together when he was dx'ed...most of the knowlege they have is fairly old school at this point. My mom is forever getting on to me about all sorts of things d-related...most of it based on her knowledge from how things were done before. When she found out I don't eat a bedtime snack she just about fell out. ALL diabetics MUST have a bedtime snack. I explained to her how lantus works. My dad never says much of anything, but he listens to everything I say.
Over the past few months my mom has gotten on to me about skipping meals. Diabetics can NEVER skip a meal. I again, explained to her how lantus works. My dad was listening. I told her that if the lantus is at the right dose, you should be able to not eat at all and not go low.
Well, after all of this my dad has taken this into consideration and lowered his lantus dose over the past month from 26 units at night to 15. He's semi-retired and not working at all right now due to some health issues with my mom. Not very active. This concerned me because he's taking less than I am and he's larger than me. (he's about 5 foot 8, 200 pounds..no fat) My mom is obviously worried about what he's doing, and she keeps telling me that he did this because I told him he could (meaning he listened to what I said and just did it)...so now I feel responsible.
I quized him about all of this yesterday. He's waking up around 110 every day. He's not having lows. He can skip meals. But he's taking around 45 units of humalog a day. He had to increase it as he lowered the lantus. Now I know that the whole 60/40 thing on basal/bolus is just a guide...and I know that what works for you is what works. And I know there are people who take tiny basal amounts. I'm just concerned that he might be getting off kilter here. He won't discuss this with his doc; since this works, this is what he's doing, end of discussion. I took "Think Like a Pancreas" over there, and asked him to read it...it lies untouched where I sat it down.
I don't know what to do. He's soooo stubborn. I just don't want anything to happen...my mom is in NO shape to deal with him having problems...most of their issues fall on me because I'm the only one.
I've tried to get him to come on here, but he thinks computers are a waste of time...he can't even turn one on, and he won't learn, either.
Does anyone have any thoughts or advice or comments on this situation?
