Multiple endocrine failures: Who has issues other than diabetes?

I was diagnosed diabetic and hypothyroid at the same time (Dec 2006)... I was just curious as to if there are many others out there that have multiple endocrine issues/failures.

Share please?!

My TSH was 15 when diagnosed hypothyroid... now down to 1.3 on levoxyl 137, A1c was 7.8 and they didn't officially "diagnose" me with the diabetes until several months later when they were sure it was not inflated by the thyroid problem.

I also have hypothyroidism (dx 2006) as well as diabetes - Type 1 (dx 1968)
Is it true that if you already have one autoimmune disease, you have a greater risk of developing another? My next question is - what if you have two autoimmune diseases?

I started taking synthroid (.2) about 10 years after I became diabetic.

Thyroid Disease and Diabetes

Anne, if you have 2 autoimmune diseases . . . I'll have to look this up, just try not to get any more, haha!

Interesting article, thanks for posting that.

I *think* I have been hypothyriod for at least 10 years before diagnoses. I *know* the diabetes started within a year of diagnoses as my numbers were previously fine.

At first I was angry because I thought that if my hypothyroidism had been diagnosed earlier, the diabetes may not have shown up. Then my sister was diagnosed diabetic two weeks after me. She's been skinny her whole life and has NO thyroid issues. While she is 7 years older, I concluded that I would have gotten diabetes with or without the thyroid disorder. Seems both run heavily in the family.

Interesting Lloyd, thanks for chiming in. Not as many males as females out there with thyroid issues. (but I'm sure you knew that!)

I was diagnosed hypothyroid right after the diabetes diagnosis. I no recall that my thryoid was tested about 2 years prior to the diagnosis and was fine. But I really don't know which first.

I have question for my thryoid friends - how do you know when it's time to adjust? I know the classic symptoms - weight, tired, cold, hair loss etc

Does it effect BG numbers?

gambi - it certainly CAN effect your BG numbers as it controls METABOLISM and pretty much everything else in your body. That was one of the reasons they delayed my official diagnoses of Diabetes until they saw what effect my thyroid had.

The best way to monitor your thyroid is to have your levels checked via bloodlab at least 2x per year. Push for two if your doc is only ordering once, as thyroid levels can change with the seasons.

Diagnosed type 1 dec 1974
diagnosed hypothyroid 2002

It also took two years to get a positive blood result for the thyroid, they kept coming back normal, so my diabetes was getting blamed for way i was feeling.

That's really too bad. Fortunately they have tightened up the "normal" thyroid range, so people that have been "normal" for years now have a chance to get the help they need... IF their doc/lab has switched to the new acceptable range... many have not. TSH should now be between .3 and 3, rather than .5-5
