I've often wondered if my doctor has diagnosed me properly with the right type. Does anyone else doubt your doctors diagnosis of you?

I have no doubts,. This topic comes up a few times a year, often buried in threads.

Many people are clearly type 1 or 2 but I think there are a lot of people who just don't fit the 'typical' patterns.The more I read, the more different varieties of diabetes there seem to be. The labels were only changed in the late 1990s and since then there have been more and more unofficial subdefinitions.
I hadn't realised until a doctor mentioned it to me the other week that even within the official definitions type 1 is subdivided and not is always autoimmune.


Type 1a is autoimmune but there is also a type 1b where the person, is insulin dependent, prone to ketoacidosis yet has no evidence of autoimmunity and has no other known cause for beta-cell destruction. They are may be diagnosed as having idiopathic or type 1B diabetes.

I am type one and there was never a doubt even though I was diagnosed at age 32. I did not have a honeymoon period. I was hospitalized for a week while a clear diagnosis was made. So..no. No doubts.

I don't doubt that I'm a type 1 but its interesting to read about the type 1a/b thing. I'm not sure about that. I know I'm type one because for about a 6 months I lost around 35 pounds without doing anything. I couldn't gain weight if I tried. I was drinking over a gallon of water a day (probably saved me), and could hardly stay awake ( about 7 bottles of soda before the end of work). So my wife dragged me to the dr and I hit 350 without having eaten in over 4 hours. Came back the next day for a Blood test, and bam My pancreas misewell have been not even attached, there wasn't a trace of anything that looked like insulin. I think my first fasting test was in the high 200s..

The weird part was that other than the extreme water drinking and losing weight I guess I thought it was normal. I kinda wish I was put in the hospital for the weekend, but of course my wonderful dr didn't want to do that, because I.. wait for it.. I looked fine. Instead the genius said we'll try pills until we get you on insulin. Followed that sentence with "Even though they won't work". So I remained in the 300s 400s high 200s (not eating anything that looked like carbs ) for about 2 weeks. So I'm pretty sure I'm type 1, but I guess there's always the grey area.
