Why what or what why

In regards to Diabetes, if questions are not posed in the correct order, answers will be void of any hope.I've been looking for Why and I don't understand What. I know nothing about this stuff. I don't inject myself. My wife does that for me. I don't even know what kind of insulin I use. What am I doing?

The number one thing al of us have to do to beat this disease, and it can definately be beaten, is to take personal, vigilant control of everything: our meds, our diets, our activity ... our lives.

There's no silver bullet. It's taking small steps forward and never stopping.

I think we all go through a stage of trying to deny the relevance of diabetes to our lives. More often than not, it kicks us in the but and we are forced to take it seriously. Sounds like you don't have a sense of ownership of the condition. Until you accept that having diabetes is a major element of who you are, making sense of it will be very difficult. And getting it under control will be almost impossible. Coming to terms with diabetes and rising to the challenge, on the other hand, can be very liberating and empowering. Have you considered discussing this with a counselor?

Hopenopus, it sounds like the idea of having diabetes is so upsetting to you, that you are pretty much handing it to your wife to handle for you.....and that's not fair, to YOU or to her.

Diabetes is not a death sentance, but it is a life sentance....from now on, you are a diabetic. Embrace this...you didn't ask for it, you can't change it...it is what it is.

However, YOU can be in control...YOU can learn what to eat, YOU can learn the names of your meds...YOU can learn to inject your own meds...and you'll feel much more in control when you do.

Instead of focusing on WHY, focus on HOW...HOW can you take charge, feel better and have the life you deserve with diabetes.

I hope you take this in the spirit i'm intending....I don't mean to sound harsh....you should have seen my shaking hands the first time I had to test my blood sugar...the first time I injected...I was petrified...but I was determined that diabetes would not own me...i'd manage it if it was the last thing I did....and you can too!

Sounds like you are lucky to have such a wife.

Understanding what you're doing (or your wife is doing) will help you understand the whys. As hard as it might seem, the more you learn the more you can help yourself.

You are correct to not be focusing on the why, and focus on the what. That will be much more beneficial to getting it under control.

Hopenopus, have you been to a Diabetes Education class? If not talk to your doctor - insurance covers it and/or he can point you to a free one. Its will be the first step towards understanding and ultimately taking charge.

Knowledge is everything with this I am learning. I have only been diagnosed a few weeks. While you need a team of specialist to help, at the end of the day you can manage it best with a little knowledge.

Oh, and this forum rocks.

Are you testing your blood glucose daily? How often and what are you/your wife doing with the results?
