Dka!!!!!

Hello everyone,

Well my upset stomach lead to DKA. I was let out of 1 ER with acetone in the urine and put back in another ER, 2 days later then, admitted for 2 days. I was soooo dizzy and dehydrated and felt awful!
In the 25 years of T1 I had never had DKA. Im better now, but what an experience. The doctor told me anything from bad meat to a virus can cause this. How true is this?

Sorry to hear about your ER & Hospital visits, glad that you are better now. I can't answer your question, just wanted to give you a ((HUG)) after what you've been through.

Wow! I suppose a sudden acute illness can shoot your BGs way up. I've experienced similar with stomach flus.

A reminder not to take illness lightly.

It makes sense when DKA is preceded by inadequate insulin. But an infection or a bug can also cause it, especially in children. I don't think the doctors really understand why this happens. Our daughter, Caroline had an infected injection site that caused her to be hospitalised with DKA. Glad to hear that you are better now.

I'm glad that you were able to avoid DKA for so long, and hope you needn't experience it again. I trust (and hope!) that you feel much better now...

yeah most illnesses can cause DKA or high blood sugar i was in ER last year with a stomach upset and got it (ok it wasn't helped by the docs not giving me ANY insulin for two days, but still..). Just remeber to give yourself more insulin when ill and drink lots and lots of water
