I am not sure why we should all read this. The article reports on a study that suggests that we, as diabetics, have a greater risk of dying if we are hospitalised for heart failure. Heart failure, unfortunately is more likely for diabetics, so it's no stretch that were it to occur, it's more likely to be fatal. What's not clear, and seemingly not looked at, is whether this is the case even if control is very good. In general, there are too few people with that good control to make that an interesting question as researchers define it. For this forum, that IS a very important question however.

I didn't read it all - but the bit that interested me is that
if you keep your BGs really low then you have more risk of dying!

So the fact that I have great difficulty keeping low numbers, which
means my numbers are mostly 7 - 9 mmols, could this be be good for me
and why I always feel much better when I have higher blood sugars?

I think the "really low has a greater chance of dying" is a result of a recent high profile study done here in the US where very tight control was being tested. The research was stopped because of higher than expected mortality but there has been some outcry as to the way the study was conducted and the populations used. I believe that European health groups are continuing with their protocols related to very tight control. Stay tuned!

in any long emergency operation involving a general anesthetic there will be an increased risk for diabetics as controlling blood sugar whilst unconsious is rather hard :P. Medic alert bracelets are pretty handy for people dealing with you, especially if u have a heart attack !

An important distinction here, is that this study is talking about Heart Failure (Congestive Heart Failure - CHF) as opposed to a Heart Attack (Myocardial Infarction - MI):

Heart failure is a progressive condition where the pump becomes less efficient and pressure regulation between the heart and lungs can lead to fluid build up, leading to difficulty in breathing, and/or swollen legs and increased strain on an already failing pump

MI is the acute onset Emergency Room type deal as seen on TV.

Of course, MIs or the reduced myocardial blood flow that causes them can also lead to CHF.

I also believe that those with D (especially type 2) who have MIs have a lower chance of survival.

Diabetics and pre-diabetics hospitalized for acute heart failure face a greater risk of dying in the hospital. Published in the medical journal Heart, the study tracked 454 patients admitted to a university hospital for heart failure. More than half of the patients had normal blood glucose, 24% had diabetes and 13% had pre-diabetes. Of the 454 patients, 11% died in the hospital, and researchers found a relationship between random elevated blood glucose concentration on admission and mortality. Researchers encouraged heart failure patients with diabetes or pre-diabetes to receive intensive therapy in order to improve prognosis.

Past studies have suggested a link between insulin-using advanced heart-failure patients and death, but physicians and researchers have called for further research on the topic. If you’re at risk of heart failure and use insulin to manage your diabetes, maintaining tight control over your blood glucose levels may improve your prognosis if hospitalized.
