I very much agree with the idea of testing 6-10+ times a day. Really i think anyone on insulin should be testing as much as they possibly can, as an MDIer I have tested 9.3 times on average over the last 2 weeks. I use NIVIA Hand Nourishing Cream almost every night and rotate fingers every test. I just hope CGMs will become economical and accurate in the not too distant future, even 10 times a day doesn’t account for most of a 24hours day. Flying blind is just what we do.

After 24 years of poking (though back in the day 3x a day was suffice...) My fingers are never going to be soft and supple ever again. Using vasaline or other hand cream at night may help. I only use 6 fingers. (I've never liked my thumbs and I only used to use myindex fingers as a kid they are so worn out that I rarely use them now.) I've never liked any "alternative sites" either. Running fingers through some warm water tends to help so that I'm not squeezes as much.

As for testing 10 times a day..I'm anywhere between 6-14. And that is with using my fasting as my pre-breakfast. Testing is the only way you know how things are going.

I test a minimum of 8 times a day, upwards of 10-12, depending on how my blood sugars are running.

I favor my thumbs.......preferrably the left one. Over the last couple of months, I have been filing the callouses down using a very rough emery board or pumice stone. This has helped a bit. I also find I'm applying hand cream a little more often than I had been.

I disagree that it is hard to be in control as a type 2 on oral meds. I have not had an a1c over 7 in years. My fasting is staying pretty much in 2 digits and my doctors say I am doing great.

I am losing weight about 2 pounds a month again great with my doctor. So it is very possible to be on oral meds and well controlled. It is a matter of discipline and I am offended by type 1s who say it is not.

Smile Fingertips due to fingersticking

If you too experience cracking of the skin on your fingertips then simply just switch to a mild antibacterial soap when washing your hands. This will not only save your fingers, but it will save you money, too

I disagree as well, but I'm puzzled because I don't see it stated anywhere in this thread that a Type 2 on oral meds cannot have good control? Can either of you please clarify?

I use eight fingers: all but my index fingers. Hurts too bleeping much. I test 5-7 times per day, sometimes more, depending on how I feel. Maybe, when I've got a better handle on what my body will take and what it won't, I'll cut down on my frequency.

I like Aveeno lotion for softer fingers. There's always the lotion and cotton gloves solution overnight, too!

To put the records straight, have to agree with you fgummett, navigated the threads Hard Fingers back to back, couldn't see any thing on, Type 2 on oral meds cannot have good control. sorry, wrap the knuckles, I stand corrected, kind of a knee jerk reaction to Janlaton post.
