This is a great place to rant, so don't worry about the long post
Well, first off... DON'T listen to that retarded doctor! It is YOU and only YOU who knows what works best for YOU! So if you are going high or low with the doctors suggested doses, then change them to something that fits YOU! Just see the doctors doses as suggestions to use as a guideline to find your own balance. I've pretty much set up my own doses, my doctors suggestions has just been, well, suggestions... I use it as a startpoint and then i adjust my doses myself if/when needed
I really hope things will sort out for you real soon!

I have tried the "argue into oblivion" plan. I am now left with the smile and nod option. It is good advice.
Apparently the powers that be have heard my rant, and not an hour ago, the Nurse of BigCity Dr. called me (finally), and huh, funny enough, once I explained the charts and what was going on SHE AGREED WITH ME. While I am relieved that we are now working together (without the Dr's pesky interference), Is it wrong of me to wish they had just taken the time to listen to me in the first place?
Do I really have to go through 3 weeks of phone calls, emails, and arguments after every 3 month appointment? Jeeeze! (yes, this is not the first time)
Thanks for the support, guys. Unless you, your spouse, or your child has it...YOU JUST DON'T KNOW.
And Steamfan261.....Thanks, you are a RIOT!!! ( The smell of burning feathers still lingers from my first endo.......)

Congrats, Carisa!
I was going to suggest the a) smile, nod, agree, take scrips home approach, or b) find an internist who is a nice person and will take care of your general med issues and be glad to write scrips and not bother that much w/your D, or c) if you're anywhere near Miami, try the Diabetes Research Institute and the U of Miami (I was on a clinical trial list there and was reasonably impressed with the docs),
But it sounds like you've gotten your point across with BigCity Nurse--YAY! |

| | Diabetes breaks the usual model and that can be hard for some (but thankfully not most) health care professionals to deal with: in the usual model they are the experts and they tell us what to do and we dutifully go off and fill the prescription. Not so with D... we are in control... we have to be. Arm yourself with knowledge from here at DF, books, interweb etc..., test your sugars, keep a journal of everything... how much insulin, what you ate, what you did, how you feel, blood sugars, for your own benefit but also to take this along to your clinic and show them that you are capable of managing your D so long as they are willing to support you. Good Luck

| | | I know exactly how you feel. I've been diabetic for 43 years and have usually had great endo's as I transferred criss-cross over the US. My last endo only saw "increase Lantus" as a close to any appt.
Although I never took the full recommended dose she prescribed (as one who subscribes to the "work it out yourself" mode...) I did always try to increase as much as I could stand...instead, my A1C would go higher from all the rebounding from lows. It was frustrating when she made me feel like I was "working too hard".
Since my last move, I have had the best numbers ever...especially lately when I lowered my Lantus back to the "
feeling human again" range...
I respect most doctors but do understand as I get older than they aren't really looking at the wrinkles of this disease...just the textbook answers in most cases.
My older endo's were much more interested in my jobs, lifestyle and successes.
I'm in a city with dozens of endo's...I plan on shopping around to find someone I feel comfortable with. I've worked too hard to be put on the "non-compliant list" since I don't wish to go on a pump...I'm getting my best MDI number ever...and don't wish to start over.
I will pump someday when the numbers are weird...but not now. I have nothing against pumping but don't feel the doctors should use the pump to end all "problems"...they don't end with the pump. |

| | | Welcome! Rant away! Congrats on taking charge and figuring out what you actually need!
And... why is it that none of us are endos? Maybe there are good ones, but from the horror stories I keep hearing...
I'm glad that my doctor lets me do my own thing. And appointments / consultations actually are such -- not just five-minute "hi-and-bye" sessions. (Anyone near Lawrence, KS who wants a referral... PM me!)

| | | I am of the "smile, nod, and I test and inject 8 times a day so write me an Rx for that" camp.
