Exclamation Nasty Tooth Infection

OK everyone,

I had a filling replaced in a rear molar 4 weeks ago. After 3 weeks I started getting severe pain that radiated to my jaw and up the side of my face. Dentist said that the tooth that was filled had died, was infected and I had a Abscessed Tooth. It has been three days, and the pain in my tooth has brought me to my knees and made me cry like a baby. I have been taking two kinds of antibiotics and still the infection has not broke. Pain is unbelievable, been 3 days. I have never ever had problems with infections before.

I am thinking my diabetes is the reason I cannot break this infection. I have had tight control of my sugars since Dx. Could this be a complication of this disease?

It could be Rich, but I am not sure why the dentist isn't doing more. Years ago when I was a kid, I got an abcessed tooth. The dentist did a root canal and packed it and I was on antibiotics.

Call your dentist and see what else he can do. You shouldn't be suffering like this.

My dentist drilled it out and packed it with medicine. I am sceduled for root canal on Tuesday. I am taking my antibiotics and pain killers. Dentist said she cannot do root canal until the infection breaks. Unbareable pain, even thinking of calling a regular doctor today.

You can try salt water rinses and ask the doctor for a pain med. If not then take Tylenol every 2 hours and then Motrin every 2 hours.

No doctor will do the root canal with an infection. Heck, alot of doctors don't even pull teeth unless you have been on an antibiotic for a few days.

I can say though that even though you have pain it doesn't mean the antibiotics aren't working. I had a toothache awhile back and they did a procedure to get me out of pain while waiting for a root canal appointment. They then filled my tooth with a temporary filling. About 2 weeks later I was in so much pain that I called the dentist and said I needed to get in and just pull the tooth because I couldn't stand the pain. They put me on antibiotics that didn't help at all. Turns out I never had an infection but a piece of the temp filling went deep inside my tooth causing all the fuss.

Gosh Rich, I hope you are feeling better today. Tooth pain is AWFUL. I hope you got some pain meds and the antibiotics are kicking in.

Been there done that.
The stress caused by dental pain isn't good for you.
Call your dentist and get some pain meds.
I hate using them but my Dentist gave me Tylenol 3 when I had to wait a week under similar circumstances.
