Heartburn anyone?

I have had heartburn since I was around 16 years old. (Yikes, that is 30 years! )

I am used to taking between 150-300 Rolaids or Tums in a month, sometimes more. I have had my stomach photographed a zillion ways, cameras swallowed.. etc. I have taken every medication out there for this, to no avail.

I haven't had heartburn in almost a month, hence not a single Rolaid, Tum or any other kind of OTC for this!

If this is all I ever get out of lowcarb/nocarb, I am forever grateful.

I will never place carbs on my list of regular foods again. (ok, pumpkin pie both did in my numbers and caused a mild burning, I dealt with this with baking soda, ewwww )

I had much more minor issues with acid reflux and heartburn. Since going low-carb, those issues have disappeared.

Same here, I was taking Prilosec 2 out of every 4 weeks until I went low carb in August, now no problems.

Well, it's great that you found relief! I'm curious, what foods specifically did you cut back/eliminate? Were there any particular carb-heavy favorites that you had frequently but then stopped? Anything specific that you had been eating for so many years?

that's weird... i was diagnosed with acid reflux and tried almost every prescription out there... my doctor told me it was caused by all the meds i was taking and, get this... told me to take zantac 150mg everyday to get rid of it...

granted, the ranitidine (generic name) helps a great deal, if i forget to take it one day, i'll pay for it the next day... until i see my gp or endo, i can't go low/no carb, so i'm kinda stuck here...

my sister, who is 9 months pregnant right now (gonna have a c-section friday morning - 6th kid), was told she has an ulcer but won't find out until after she's had the baby, she was told to take things like tums and malox, etc... otc stuff that's not really meds just milky antacid stuff... but she does it a lot of complex carbs, not just "empty" carbs... she eats very well and at 5'8" she's noramlly 140lbs (she's not diabetic), but i wonder if she went low/no carb perhaps her "ulcer" would go away...

I have cut back on any of the white carbs, potatoes, white rice, potatoe chips, !pop!, chocolate, pasta, processed soups and the list goes on. I don't eat them at all.

I use WeightWatchers bread allowing 2 slices a day for a total of 8 carbs there and any other ones I get from tomatoes (can NOT say no to those, and those used to kill my already messed up tummy with the acid added to my own), cukes, and plenty of salad.

I have taken ranitidine in the past for years with each day being a wonder of what it was that would start the reflux. It would start with the first piece of toast in the morning or bowl of cereal.

I am so amazed with this result I trully can not believe it! 30 years of agony gone in a month!!!!

Rock on low carb, rock on!

I have severe GERD. Carbs and veggies are about the only foods I can tolerate. Any meat makes me gaggy or pukey. I take 30 of Prevacid twice a day, 20 of domperidone 4x/day, and have carafate and zofran prn. Much better.

I've had severe colon issues since I was a baby, so heartburn is something I unfortunately have to live with. Barely any medicine really helps me when I get it bad, which sucks. I have been known to break down crying in some situations when it gets too bad, but fortunately this has not happened much in the last year. I have some heartburn right now in fact, and I have no idea why since I have not eaten since midnight and nothing I have eaten lately really affects me. It's a weird thing.

I guess the best thing I usually do is just try to ignore it the best I can, but of course that is easier said than done. I get very gassy too which does not help my situation any.

I took Tums every day before I started eating low carb. I don't even have Tums in the house anymore. However, I do not think it is cutting the carbs that made the difference for me. See, I think what gave me heartburn was the combination in the morning of coffee + fat (butter on my toast). I also had got heartburn if I had chocolate (a lot of fat in that) with coffee. Truth is, the carbs I consumed often came along with a lot of fat. My heartburn was very mild, but it did go away with my new style of eating. I still drink coffee, but not much fat at the time I drink the coffee. That doesn't mean I have a low fat diet; it just happens that I don't often combine heavy doses of fat with coffee.

I had acid reflux just before my big D diagnose. vegetables before bed relieved it. But I was bloated from the D and I sleep on my stomach. With the low carb and the weight loss, the acis reflux disappeared.
Some people have a weak flapper and there is not much you can do about that, but for most, a diet change is all that is needed. Problem is people would rather take a pill than change their ways. I think it's my body's way of making me do the right thing. That is also why I do the diabetes the natural way. I am just glad I attacked it soon enough to be able to.
