when I used to work out alot I got asked if I had any extra insulin. It supposedly is considered an anabolic substance. Therefore, will make you gain weight quicker.

What I've heard supposed by the bodybuilder types is insulin (or insulin raising food really) combined with protein is the perfect post-workout combination.

The insulin (or insulin producing foods) causes your cells to open up and feed. While they are open, the fast-digesting protein found in most protein shakes slide right into the muscle cells. Supposedly this reduces catabolism and increases muscle mass because your body is in the right frame of mind to soak up much of the protein being thrown at it due to the amount of energy expenditure during the workout.

I was (and still am, even though you would never be able to tell by looking at me) into bodybuilding. Insulin is the most potent anabolic substance you can take--It's mere purpose is to push energy into cells, and you can't push weight without energy.

I used to get hit up a lot when I worked out at Golds...One of the guys found out I was diabetic, and the news spread like wildfire. I tried and tried to explain to these guys that they didn't know what they were risking, but they always left it at "Hey Duck, if you ever reconsider..." Man what I would give to be "normal" so I could have been able to diet better back in the day...

I am deeply disturbed by this, and other, comments here. I am a narcicist/*******? I am a former bodybuilder, and if I had the time, I would be still. These comments are just as bigoted as any other prejudgicial statement in race or creed. In fact, true, natural body building would CURE alot of type II diabetics! I really resent this attitude!

That being said, I never took any drug to help out the process, and I think that those that do are incredibly stupid and short sighted. However, I do not believe the injecting of insulin is against any law, or necessarily proscribed in any way. So, although questionable, really, there is nothing wrong with it. Just because YOU have to do so to survive, does not make the use of it when not needed for life distasteful.

IMHO, anyone who would intentionally inject themselves with insulin when it is not needed, is in desperate need of some type of help. That said, the previous posts are other's opinion about this. Take it as that, AN OPINION !!!!!!! We all have them !!!!!

If You did Not take any steroids or insulin before becoming diabetic, then really, these statements don't apply to you. What I believe Meech may have meant (as I know I did) was that the people who think they "Need" to take insulin, steroids or any other drugs to enhance them or their bodies are foolish, and could indeed cause harm to themselves or their health down the road. If it's not necessary, why take it? I worked as a vet. tech for several years, and in that time, saw many animals that used Prednisone (a Steroid) to treat rashes and other conditions. These same animals developed Diabetes a couple of years later. Steroids (i.e. Decadron) are also used to treat cancer (to prevent nausea and to reduce tumor size), and cause weight gain along with other side effects. That's where my "bias" ("prejudice") comes from.

Mark, I agree with your sentiment, but I don't think the remarks are pointed at bobybuilders like you, but toward the "meatheads" who would do anything for that extra ounce of muscle, or that extra vascularity, etc. And that attitude pervades all sports, as we are seeing with the Balco incident in the MLB.

Some of my proudest moments came in a gym: I benched 305 pounds once, and that was quite a scene! Though even then I doubt anyone looked at me and thought "There's a buff dude".

I don't get any more offended by the professional bodybuilders who inject insulin than I do when I see "normal" people stuffing their faces with twinkies and ho-ho's. To me, both are just as ignorant.

And while I am at it, diabetics should give bodybuilding a fair shake as part of your lifestyle--the added musclemass is good for your metabolism and blood sugar maintenance, and there is something to be said about the pride you feel from pushing weight that was once too heavy for you.

So here is a choice I have.............my extra insulin that I have I could possible sell it to bodybuilders at a gym or I could send it to an under developed country where people with diabetes can take it an live............................

Choice is clear to me.....it is being shipped.
