Wrong Direction!

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR. I started feeling low so I tested and was at 67. I figured, not too low, but I should correct now before it gets worse. I didn't want to overcorrect so I had one glucose tab and a glass of milk. Tested fifteen minutes later and I am at 53! What the ****?! I promptly ate 4 glucose tabs and am waiting to test again. Of course, now I feel like ****. I hate this sometimes.

This is what I call a "crash" and to me, they feel different. I can tell when my BG has just been dropping slowly or when its a more rapid decline.

Sounds like you're treating it right - the 'ol 15-15-15 rule! When I am that low, like the 50's, I usually Tx with 2 choices right away, figuring that 1 choice = about 50 BG points, so I wouldn't be hugely over the top if it rose 100 pts, KWIM? And again, I can usually feel if I am crashing and if I am going to drop lower before I feel better.

Hope you snap out of it quickly!!

Now I'm at 217! That's after about 30 grams of carbs total. I'm about to cry.

I hope your BG has normalized today. This condition is so frustrating!!! There's just no replacing the original equipment, is there? But the alternative's not that attractive.......

I fail to see how a pre-diabetic not on insulin and not having exercised to excess could have gone so low. Is what you experienced possibly reactive hypoglycemia that prompted a liver dump?

I usually take ONE glucose tablet to treat a hypo (because a 4g carb glucose tab raises me 20 points). Then I wait 15 minutes and test. If need be, I take another and repeat the process. I never treat a hypo with more than one glucose tab at a time or food because it's so easy to overtreat. Since each gram of carbohydrate can potentially raise you 5 points, the 30 grams you consumed could raise your BGs up to 150 points which doesn't account for your BGs to have gone up to 217.

I hope I'm reading your post wrong, but it almost sounded like you were calling me a liar. I am prone to episodes of hypo- it's what got me diagnosed in the first place. I managed to hit 45 after the OGTT. (That was fun- not). It most likely was a reactive hypo as I have been running higher than normal all week, probably from stress and sleep deprivation from starting my student teaching.

I only treated with one at first because I don't want to overtreat. Then when it dipped lower I did the full 4 that I was told to do by the CDE. The each have 4 grams and the standard rule is treat with 15 grams carbs, wait 15 minutes, test, then repeat if necessary. That is exactly what I did, except the first time I didn't use 15 grams figuring I wouldn't need that much.

It was a fair question. "pre-diabetic" means no meds at all to me. We don't know your history intimately. You might want to add something to your signature about your condition.

What was your previous meal like? What was your pre-meal test like? If you are running higher than normal, you should be seeing your doctor about meds.

I'm not on any meds at all. I probably shouldn't have reacted so strongly, but the tone of the post came across as very condescending. I posted last night out of frustration and to vent. It frustrates me when I come back and feel like I am being talked down to or called a liar. I apologize if that's not the person's intent, but it is how it came across to me.

I don't have anything in my signature right now because frankly I don't know what to put. I've been officially told pre-diabetic, but I get readings well over 200 if I screw up my eating and also get lots of "fun" hypos.

As for my meal, I'm pretty sure I know why it happened. I took my licensing exam yesterday and celebrated by going to the movies and eating popcorn and having soda and some Reese's. It was a freaking stupid move, but I've been doing really well with the eating changes and was wanting to have a "day off". Lesson learned.

As a suggestion, something along these lines would be perfect for your sig!

LOL, yes the eating, not the movies. It's been a stinking exhausting week with having to go back to a normal schedule and it was nice to have a day off so to speak (well, except of the test). Today I told my boss I can only work Saturdays. I'm currently looking for a job that I can do with my student teaching and have more than one day of availability. I am giving up my Sunday availability so I can have at least one day off a week.
