Angry The dreaded "Day Before a Colonoscopy" has arrived

I hate this day. Its been 5 years since I had this sort of fun so I'm due for the good old colonoscopy. I also flunked the smear test thing so the VA called me in record time.
. Let's see. Got the Kick-a-Pooh joy juice on ice, a few extra rolls of TP next to the device invented by Thomas J Crapper, and I even cleaned the blades of the exhaust fan up in the ceiling of the relief room. This afternoon, let the good time begin.
. Since I'm on a liquid diet today, the nurse told me to drink sugary stuff and cut my insulin in half. This might get interesting. I usually take 8u to 14u of Humalog per meal and 30u Lantus at night. Without a load of insulin, a can of soda jump starts me out of a hypo and into the stratosphere. I suppose it's better to be a bit on the high side rather than bottoming out.
. But this too, will pass. A mere day from now, I'll be getting back to whatever normal means.
Tally ho,
Tom

Tom,

I had this done a few months ago. The worst part is the air they leave you full of!! Most places have something to take the air out of you -- make sure you say yes if they ask you! I'm not usually one to laugh at gas issues, but looking back, it's pretty awful when you go in a bathroom after it's over. Anyone outside and listening has just got to be laughing their butts off!

Good luck!

Sounds to me like you will bottoming out ... right after All Things Must Pass.

Good luck to you with it -- I am a couple years overdue for mine.

Good luck, Tom - I hope all goes well. When I had mine done, I was the first one of the day. The doctor was a nice chatty person, so asked me how the preparation had gone - I told him that I had tried hard to think nice thoughts about him the afternoon before but it had been a stretch. He thought that was funny but I was being serious!

This is great fun!!! Mine is tomorrow morning at 7 am. I am as clean as a newborn baby!!!

On the serious side, this is difficult for type 1's. My test is at 7:30 am and I am also the first one of the day. My blood sugar dropped to 57 about an hour ago and I had a can of Arizona Sweet Tea to bring up my blood sugar. It is still a bit scary. After all of this nauseating prep, I didn't want to have to eat food. So far so good, but I have 12 hours to go.

Good luck. I found out that I had undiagnosed pancreatitis during my colonoscopy prep. Joy.

Yowza! That sounds painful. So far just so sick of water I could scream and glad the prep med is gone. I don't think I have ever had so much water to drink in my life. I hate water.

I am naive on what's happening here. But as far that I can gather it don't seem appealing. Please explain this to me?
Meanwhile i'll hold my nose.

If not a colonoscopy, then the good old barium enema

Was sitting on the exam table, all ready to go. The doctor came in a asked how I was doing. Told him, "Just fine, a twinge of angina now and then, but other than that, I'm honky dory." I should have lied! Half an hour later, after seeing my normally screwed up EKG, the doc cancelled it.
He sent me upstairs to get a barium enema instead. This was a minor miracle, being that I was in a VA hospital where everything gets scheduled 2 months out. But being that I was all cleaned out and being real pleasant about it, I guess a special deal was made just for me. Life is good. The barium enema is not. Give me a colonoscopy any day when you're completely knocked out. With the barium stuff, you get turned around, up-side-down and blown full of air. Lots of air, enough air to cross your eyes. But once it was over, the news was good. No polups, just a few little fissures (diverticulosis). I'm good to go for another 5 years.
. A word about glucose numbers: I was down around 50 when it was over. They wouldn't let me leave until it was over 120. Found out that the docs prefer that a diabetic to have high glucose rather than being a bit hypo. It seems to be a lot safer, as in having a better heart rhythm.
Tally Ho,
Tom

It isn't all that bad

Hey Art -
Hope you reconsider. The evening before the colonoscopy, a few hours of hanging out in the john. But that's about the entire bad news for doing it. A few years ago my wife said the same thing but went ahead and did it. Good thing, a dime size polup was removed, it was cancerous. Got it out before it spread. So now she gets to do the john thing once a year. The alternative is a whole lot worse.
Fly right -
Tom

Had this done three times and it's no big deal. Seem to have a tendency for these little puppies and am supposed to get it done every three years. Think I am due this year so a phone call is expected. The last time the doctor told me to wait for them to call. For some reason I can never remember the last time I had it done. Maybe it's the drugs. My luck they will call when I'm out of the country.
