- Novorapid and Humulin R -

I have a box of Humulin R cartridges that are getting close to the expiry date. I know you can actually use it much past that, but still.

Is it safe to use Humulin R, if you are using Novorapid?

I want to use the Humulin R for those times when I am quite sure I will be eating within 20-30 minutes from the time I injected it.

I use Novorapid usually cuz I am afraid I may forget to eat, or forget to eat as much if I bolus that far ahead.

Ive mixed and matched. Just understand in some people there are slight differences. Keep close to your meter.

There was a time on MDI where I used R as part of a "dual wave" bolus... you get the immediate action of the rapid, and the slightly slower action of Regular.. it worked reasonably well for some foods, like Pizza.

Before I started pumping I often used Regular as well as Humalog. I'd use Regular for eating out and high fat meals. I never mixed the two or used both for the same meal, even in different injections.

I had a severe hypo tonight using Humulin R.

I am talking nothing like I have ever felt.

I was sitting here, surfing, and everything started to get dark and blurry. I was dizzy, and felt like it was something else, not a hypo, which I would recognize.

I went to lay down hoping it would pass. It's a good thing I had enough sense to think to test, instead of closing my eyes.

My reading was 2.1 mmol/l... And I am sure it was actually lower since readings aren't for the exact time you are testing, and it was probably still dropping. (Correct?)

Scared me. I have never felt anything like that. My head felt tight, I heard like rustling in my ears.

This was a few hours ago. It was only 4 units and I know the carbs were around 50 grams.

Maybe I am super sensitive to Humulin R.

I had also covered my supper with Novorapid. I wonder if that affected the action of the R.

I am okay now, and am gonna test once more before bed.

With that... Time to meet the sandman.

It was so bad, I panicked. I didn't care about spiking my sugars. I was worried it was dropping too fast and the sugary stuff I treated myself with wouldn't work on time. I just thought I will deal with the high later, since highs don't really affect me that much.

I ate a O'Henry bar, drank a can of Coke, and ate some Cheddar Sun Chips.

An odd thing... When yer low, and drinking say pop, it is an incredible taste as yer guzzling it. Almost orgasmic, if that makes any sense.

This is so complicated, and taxing... And just when you think you are playing the game right, the rules change, and sometimes daily. Blah.

Well, time to test and then bed.

Maybe I'll update with my results.

I do have a juice box by my bed for situations like this, so I don't overdo it. I mean you will only get so many carbs from a juice box.

But I hit the fridge for pop anyway.

I wasn't thinking straight of course.
