At pharmacies in the Los Angeles area, one can expect to pay just about $100 for a pack of 100 OneTouch strips without insurance. This summer in Ontario Canada I paid about $89 (Can) for 100 strips. I've found them as low as $69 for 100 on the web. No matter how you slice it, those little things are pricey!

Wow, that is pricey! I would have guessed they would charge $.50 per strip or so.

The Reli-on Ultima is a Precision Xtra with the Ketone function disabled. The strips are also coded so you cannot use them in a regular meter. If I didn't have insurance that is the meter I would get in a heartbeat. I used the Precision Xtra for a while with no problems until my insurance changed their formulary.

Walmart's price must be close to what the insurance company pays for strips. The insurers have huge clout because they can switch thousands of users at the stroke of a pen.

ReliOn strips are about 40¢ each.

It does seem that the free market goes out the window when insurance companies get involved... I bought a few bottles of Ketostix urine Ketone test strips myself at the pharmacy for around $8 each. Then I found out that my company benefits package would pay for them if I had a prescription. When I picked up the script I saw the charge per bottle (to insurance) was now closer to $18..!

That is because the pharmacy's charge a "dispensing fee" on prescribed stuff that isn't charged OTC.

I noticed this here in Ottawa once......

No wonder Shopper's can open all these fancy new stores!
