Other health problems with diabetes

This may seem like a totally stupid question, but is it common to have acid reflux or other diseases along with diabetes?

The simple answer would be yes, but alas things are never that simple. Usually for diabetes to cause other health problems the desease needs to have had time with the bg's high enough to cause damage. However on of the things I was told in class and later learned first hand was that now you have it everything thing will now affect you to a higher degree which increases over time. So anything you had before, noticed or not, and anything new will affedt you more profoundly. Sometimes it's hard to figure out which came first the egg or the chicken.

I don't know if this is the norm or not, but when I was first diagnosed and for a few weeks before when my bgs were sky high, I had acid reflux. My doctor said this was very common with diabetics. When I came down to normal levels it disappeared.

Gastropherisis (spellcheck) which is caused by nerve problems caused by diabetes which affect the stomach and the passage of food from it to the intestines. Severe pains are associated with this condition. Don't know if acid reflux is a precursor to this or not.

Before I was diagnosed and hospitalized with ketoacidosis and type 1 I was being treated for:

Acid Reflux
Hypersensitive Gag reflex / random attack gaging
a nagging cough
Blood pressures in the 160 over 98 range while on med for it.
and on pericet for a migrane that lasted 10 days.

After being hospitalized and diagnosed
The gagging stopped completely havent had an episode since
The acid reflux is gone. Not taking anythiong for it now.
BP Daily average is now 117/73 with new med.
I have a bottle of perc I don't need now.

I just saw this post and I've got a similar problem. I've got MAJOR heartburn all the time. I was able to treat it with a drug some time back (can't remember what it was) and that was the only relief I've ever gotten from it but it seems the stuff cost around $130.00 a month and I couldn't afford to use it for very long. The Pepcid Complete worked pretty well for a while but it's loosing effect now, it seems.

Hi, Jenny. Unfortunately, once the door to diabetes is opened, a bunch of other doors open up, too.

Acid reflux and GURD can cause VERY serious problems, so this is something that you dr needs to pay attention to, and treat if it becomes necessary.

Some dr's feel that just because you have diabetes, every problem you develop along the way is related. That may or may not be true. Whether it is or is not related to diabetes, this DOES NOT give your dr the right to ignore the problem, ignore your complaints, or not treat the problem.

Hope I didn't bum you out, that was not my intention, just some friendly advice for the future.

Happy New Year!

Ha! Well, not to scare anyone but Ed's now been dx'ed with:

1. Diabetes
2. Celiac sprue
3. Gastroparesis (Harold - pretty close on the spelling!)
4. Esophagitis - sp?
5. Bad bone density
6. Abnormal thyroid counts
7. Maybe - kinda - sorta periphrial neurapathy
8. Idio/un-dx'ed pain

Of course, nobody knows what is related to what or who you should see for any of it. You can get all or none of these and they can be related to all or none of these.

Bottom line ... take them one at a time and treat each one. Ed is 65yr old so many may just be age related. But NOT EVERYTHING YOU EVER DEVELOP is diabetic related. Just things that happen in your body! You can have any of these conditions whether you have dm or not!

I'm 5'4" & 118#. I now have hi-blood pressure. This is stress related ... period. BUT ... hehehehe ... you could say is it dm related. Everything I've dealt with regarding Ed has stressed me out. Viola ... hi-blood pressure?

Poo! This is where you are today and you deal with the todays of life. Which isn't too bad if you "consider the alternative"!!!!

Happy New Year! Beth.

for the acid reflux...had it for about a year and couldn't figure out why.
Try dairy products they help sooth the burning feeling and zantac over the counter works and if you take 2 of the tablets that is the prescription dose just an insight

I was diagnosed type 1 in 1965. Other than mumps, measles and chicken pox, I'd never been sick a day in my life. I was sent from school (7th grade) to the ER with a ruptured appendix--I was additionally dignosed with malnutrition and deyhdration, which soon became secondary as I went into a coma with both septic shock from the burst appendix and diabetic ketoacidosis--blood sugar levels close to 1000. I was in a coma for 3 days but recovered completely, and didn't visit a hospital again for decades. Other than my 38 years with diabetes, I have had some hand and joint involvement--carpal tunnel, tendonitis, trigger fingers--and fought high blood pressuredue to genetic risk factors. Heart attack in 1999 was blamed on my (then) 35 years of diabetes, but I'm not convinced of any connection. Emergency triple by-pass, but not a single day of work missed since then. Luck, a good education, strict parents and a stubborn refusal to accept less than perfection have helped me ramain healthy and optimistic. While I DO admit that some conditions ARE related to diabetes, it's also obvious that when doctors hear "diabetes", they like to convienently blame it for every ill you may have.

Gina and Jenny ...

You each referred to the symptom you have as being like something in the back of your throat. Is there any burning or other symptom?

Fairly regularly, I have a feeling like a lump in my throat near my adam's apple ... but it doesn't have any burning sensation or other symptom with it.
