Does anyone here know anything about ADHD. Ive been trying to look on the web and get some information but everything I find doesn't seem like very trustworthy information. I'm trying to find out if ADHD is something that only children have, I don't know if you grow out of it or if it can develop at a later age. Can anyone point me in the deirection of a good website or something?
I'd really apriciate it. |
Both of my kids were diagnosed with it. Neither actually had it. I've been through tons of research on it. How can I help you?
Is it something only children have? No, but it is diagnosed in a horrible way. If you have certain symptoms (which are IDENTICAL symptoms to anxiety), and no other cause exists, then you are assumed to have ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). It is generally treated by adding stimulants (Ritalin the most common, although it is believed that some are self-medicating with caffeine from coffee and sodas) which, the logic goes, the ADHD individual responds to "backwards" as a calming function.
Some believe that ADHD is the same disorder as several others, like Tourette's Syndrome, and along a continuum of that type of brain function. From what I recall, some dispute that.
The biggest misnomer of ADHD is that people believe that it means that you can't pay attention to anything. In truth, the definition is that you pay attention to everything equally without the ability to discriminate between them. The fan, the teacher, the clock ticking on the wall, the kids playing outside, your shoe tapping . . . all are equally important, so you pay attention to them all.
Getting information is a challenge. It tends to be a pro-con game. Some people believe there is no such thing as ADHD. Others believe ADHD is a serious ailment and must be treated as a major problem. As a result, there isn't much in the way of middle of the road information out there. Both sides are more emotional than logical when it comes to defining the condition.
If you want to believe that ADHD exists (I'm not judging . . . just telling you the choice), then you want to check the web site for CHildren and adults with Attention Deficit Disorder (CHADD). They are a national support group.
Yes, adults can be diagnosed with it as well as children. However, the belief is that ADHD is a permanent condition, and you cannot be cured. Therefore, if you think you have sudden onset ADHD, then you likely don't have ADHD at all.
I hope that helps you. Let me know if you need anything further on it.
