Wink another lantus question

Has anyone used their lantus after 28 days of it being open at room temp? I know the pharmicist and drup companies say that that's the life of it but I wonder. I wonder if it just stops working or does it do something jiggy with your sugars. Just a thaught that occured to me tonight as I need to go get a new vial but have to throw out almost a half of the old one. Thanks!

I don't use Lantus but if you do a search on here, you will find a lot of members on the forum, do live by those 28 days. They find that it does loose its effectiveness causing your blood sugars to rise.

I am on the pump but I had a terrible moment with Minimed that caused me to go on Lantus for week. The Lantus was expired but it worked. I think it was 1 month past its expired date. Now don't go thinking I told you to go use expired Lantus. What may work for me might not work for you.

I keep Lantus in the fridge. And I find it lasts about 6 weeks after being opened. After 6 weeks from being opened, potency declines and the action profile changes. I now get Lantus in 3ml cartridges, which I finish well before they lose potency. Unused cartridges, which I keep in the fridge, seem to last indefinitely.

Oh to be so lucky! Unfortumately we can't get it in a pen here in canada and the only size it's available in is a 10 ml vial. I asked and the pharmacist said that we are at least three years behind the americans and other countries. I just hate throwing so much of it away. It's not really a cost issue because it only cost me about $17/ 28 days it's just waste and who wants to pay for something you don't have to. I have small kids and there always seems like there is something you have to dish out your money for. I also just wonder how honest some of the companies are in the interest of improving their bottom line.

I have had Lantus lose potency after 29-30 days and could not explain my rise in BGL. I opened a new vial, and the new vial brought me down as appropriate.

Incidentally, I now know the limit of refrigerated Novolog. (I never draw a dose with a used syringe, by the way.) I used a vial for 52 days before it would not work to bring my BGL lower. My BGL had gone well into the 240 range unexpectedly using the appropriate amount of Novolog at meals. The new pen brought the levels back in line within a short time.

i'm on a pump now, but when I was doing the lantus / humilog mdi's... I would keep a vial in the fridge at all times, never let it sit at room temp, and I have used the same bottle for 2 months, with out a problem, and to boot, (and yes before everyone pounces on me, I know this was wrong) but I had a bottle that expired by 4 months, and I still used that without a problem. now if it sit out at room temp for 28 days, that may be a bad idea..
