Counting Carbs and Insulin Dose

Am using a 70/30 pre mixed insulin...and my doctor has given me specific doses for morning/evening.
I have slightly dialed up if I know my dinner will contain more carbohydrates than normal (for example, if I'm going to have dessert and a glass of wine I dial up 10 units instead of 8.) For the most part that seems to be working for me, does anyone else out there use the 70/30 at different levels to compensate for carb intake?

thanks!

The 70/30 premixed, aka poor man's pump, is a quick acting and long acting insulin mix. So while you may be covering your increased meal intake your increasing your chances of lows between meals and will find yourself feeding your insulin. For better control you may want to get off the premixed and take the two different types with seperate shots. Best to talk to your doctor about your need to have the ability to adjust to different demands. The premix requires a much stricter regime of diet and schedule, and not everyone has the option to follow a strict schedule because of jobs or family.

Moving this to the diabetes forum. Think you will get better responses there.

Hi Goldrun

I am on Novomix, which is a premixed insulin, & to be honest I am considering changing to the 2 different types with seperate shots, although I do not fancy the extra shots. I increased my dose this morning as I my bs was quite high (for some strange unknown reason!) & this afternoon I had a hypo.

Good luck!

Highly agree w/ Harold...
I did the Premix 70/30 for a while, and it got me poor control. You cant really control the amount of the fast acting to cover your meals due to that its "PREMIXED" and you may result in putting a bit too much of the long acting casing a Hypo later on.
