Question about being sluggish all the time

      Good Morning,

I have been type 2 for 4 years, I have a question what do ya'll do when you feel tired and sluggish? I have my aic under control, last 2 rounds were 5.8 and 5.9, I just feel tired when I get home and all I want to do is sleep. I got my weight under control and everything else seemed good last checkup. Is there something ya'll take whether it be vitamins or home remedy, any help be would be helpful.

      Thanks
      Omar

Are your BG's high at that time? If mine are high I feel the same.

Your A1c is ok, so it could be something else. Anemia, hypothyroidism, reactive hypoglycemia - you could be going low after meals, rather than high. It could be a reaction to any meds you are taking. Or it could be depression. It is more common among us that have diabetes.

I'd tell the doctor you're feeling sluggish, cause it is one of those symptoms that can be caused by hundreds of things.

I've heard people say they feel fatigue from all 3 of those meds - and people say they don't feel it at all.

That is why this is such a tricky symptom.

Not to contradict everyone, but it is unlikely that this is stemming from the Meds.

I would personally ask your PCP/GP to check your thyroid levels ...

I have just read a post on another forum where a ton of people say metformin is giving them fatigue.

I don't have that, but it is possible, Cormac.

A lot of people on metformin report the fatigue. Metformin is know to deplete B -12 and some other vitamins. So make sure your doctor runs yearly tests on levels and supplement if necessary. I take a sublingual B 12 every day to combat this. Lipitor will also deplete CoQ10 which is necessary for healthy mitochondria so you may need to supplement with that.

I agree you should have your doctor check thyroid, anemia and talk to them about the fatigue. If you have a desk job, it could be a simple fix of coming home to an activity like bike riding or yoga or some other exercise you enjoy. When I am tired, I go out and move. But, if it something physically wrong, that should be ruled out first.

Interesting thread. I am tired ALL THE TIME, too. Don't really know why. It's been that way for awhile, but more so since starting metformin. I had a total blood panel done and my vitamin B was higher than normal. My dr. said your B vitamin can't be too high so no worries.

After getting diagnosed as pre-diabetic with peripherial neuropathy, vit D and zinc deficient...my dr. put me on metformin 500 qd, metanx bid, vit d3 bid and zinc 50 qd. She also said for me to take b12 2500 mcg otc. I have still not started the B12 because I figured why take it if my B vitamin is high, right? Well, according to your post above, met can deplete your b viatmin....so guess who is gonna go buy her some b12. Wouldn't it be nice it our dr. would educate us when they gave us drugs? HA!

That still doesn't explain why I want to put my head on my desk and sleep all day. I wonder if I am bored? I imagine if I were outside with a group of people on a boat and swimming all day, I wouldn't be tired. I would be having fun and would find energy to do the fun stuff. Maybe I am just bored and need to find new avenues...after all, I sit at a desk not burning any calories and am very sedentary most of the day at work....which equals boredom.

Does any of this make sense or did I just ramble like crazy?

      It made sense, dd.

Being tired is a complicated issue. It can be caused by so many things, it is a rambling issue.

      Logical causes:

      1. Too much energy expended
      - slow down
      [unlikely]

      2. Not enough sleep (rest)
      - sleep more
      [go to bed earlier]

      3. Your body isn't being fueled
      - lethargy is often a symptom of a fuel shortage. When I hypo, I often feel sleepy as my body isn't recieveing the fuel it needs. It's a known symptom. LCHF theories say that hyperinsulinemia blocks fat buring and can make you feel both lethargic and hungry.
      - other hormone imbalances can result in similar symptoms. Older women with low estrogen, low thyroid levels, and probably many more conditions
      - low iron affects the blood's ability to transfer oxygen. You need oxygen to oxydize fuel.

See your doctor if you can't resolve it on your own.
