| | | This one snuck up on me! I have been saying on different posts that I have not been feeling well. I was having fasting reading of over 200 for several mornings. I have been extra careful about what I ate and forcin myself to exercise and drink water, even though I really wasn't feeliing too good. My knee started hurting really bad last night for no reason I could think of. But I was determined to not let all this get to me. I had oatmeal with nothing but a bit of Nutrasweet for breakfast, a sandwich of lunchmeat with low carb bread for lunch. Then despite the knee that was causing me to limp, walked for about 40 minutes. Now it is almost 5pm, I tested so I could eat some supper.....it is at 439!
This happened once before, a few months ago, but since then I have been real serious about counting carbs and exercising and drinking lots of water. Do I skip supper? I just took 12 units of Novolog...according to my doctors scale that only goes up to 300 +. Should I wait and test again, and how low do I need to be before I eat? I am very hungry. Is that because I am so high, though I have not eaten much today.

| | | You might have found that the exercise has done more harm than good. I find that if I'm running over 10mmol/l, if I exercise I actually raise my BG.
If you are hungry, then eat. Hunger casues stress, which will actually raise your BG. Test every two hours, and if you're still running high, chuck a couple more bolus units. If you're ill, there's not really a great deal you can do to predict your BG or control it - if you're ill, all your ratios are going to be out the window so I'm afraid you're just going to have to play this by ear. |

| | | I probably would have verified a test that high before correcting that much. The correction already having been given, retest to see how much and how fast you're coming down.
I agree, eat if you're hungry. You might try more protein/fewer carbs than you'd normally eat. Watch those BG closely for the next few hours!
Are you thirsty too? Spilling ketones? Have any fever? Your higher than usual BGs lately makes me thing you may be coming down with something or have an infection.

| | | Penny,
The sore knee is probably aggravating the situation. Pain can increase levels of stress hormones, which pushes blood sugars up. So get your knee sorted before change anything else. And as Deus suggests, back off on the exercise for a while.
A lot of the glucose your tests reflect, in spite of restricting carb intake, is probably being produced by your liver. You might want to try using Metformin together with your insulin to stop this. Metformin reduces the production of glucose by the liver and has worked really well for me.
Cheers,

| | | I feel like I just got off a roller coaster! I tested twice the first time, just to be sure, it was 437 and 439. I did the pen shot and waited 30 minutes I was at 388. But then I got so sick, I felt like I needed to throw up and I was very light headed. I didn't eat because I could not stay awake. I slept for 1 hour, almost like I had been drugged. Still feel a bit that way. I tested again and am at 249. I just could not put off eating any longer and am having some pork and peas, and one oven fried potato strip from the supper I made for everyone else. I am still hungry, but will wait and have a snack before bedtime, when I take my lantus. Mark, I take 3, 850 mg of Metformin and 4, 5mg of Glyburide daily.
I called my doctor, who of course was gone until Tuesday (which is when I have an appointment), there is just a message that says if it is an emergency go to the ER.
I am feeling a bit better as I eat. I also took two Ibuprofen earlier today because my knee hurt so bad. I rarely take anything but my daily aspirin.

| | | If your BS level keeps rising, than I wouldn't wait and got to the ER. That's just my opinion. But I agree with the others, with the additional pain/stress playing a BIG part in it.

| | | I hope you are starting to feel better by now.
Thats got to suck going up to 439 and back down.
That would give me a headache.
Make sure you don't over correct it when it does come down.
Good Luck Feel Better

| | | At 9:30, I was down to 161. Still feel lousy, but at least I am dropping. It is funny, I felt much better after I ate some supper, even though I was still high...what's up with that?

| | | I'm with Cinn...if it doesn't come down, please get to the ER. What are your numbers now?

I woke at 1:30, very hungry, but not feeling too bad, except for my knee aching, and I am at 78. I am wide awake, and very thirsty, so am having some iced tea with Nutasweet. I would like to eat something, but am afraid to risk it. I will wait another hour or so and if I am still hungry and am still low, have some peanut butter and crackers. What does this do to your A1C test when you have 400's and 70's, in one day? I will have one on Tuesday.

| | | Once again, if you're hungry, then eat. You're doing your body far more harm than good by starving yourself and you're only going to make your BG worse. If you feel hungry but don't eat, your liver panics and starts pumping glucose into your blood like crazy. Since it's already doing that, your BG keeps going up, and the reason you feel awful at the moment is because your liver's under so much stress.
Please, please, if you're hungry then eat something. |

| | | During the night, I had readings of 78, 87, 94. I ate one slice of low carb bread with peanutbutter, and slept 4 hours. This morning I was at 178. My knee feel much better, though.
