Since I have been back on my meds, I have tested pretty much 3 times per day...I am on Metformin 1000 mg, twice per day. My BG levels are NOT coming down. Im still well over 200 on the tests (I know, still not 376 like I was the other day before I went back in the meds), and frankly I am wondering if my BG will ever come down and level out.

Granted, Ive only been back on my meds for a few days...am I getting paranoid for no reason? Does it take the Metformin a while to level me out? I feel fine and am not shaky or anything but the BG is hovering between 200-280 no matter when I test. This morning I tested before i ate and it was 236...I tested just now, an hour after i ate and it was 287. I want to see me get into the low 100's. IS this something that is just going to take time, or what?

Metformin does take a little while to start working, or so the other Type 2's here who use it claim. They also say you'll get some good gas.

I was trying to remember the progression of my medication doses. I started at 1000 a day of Metformin, that was increased to 850mg x 3, a day.
Then they added Glyburide, starting at 5mg, one a day, to two 5mg, twice
daily. That progressed to the insulin shots. My doctor made the changes, but he had me call with my progress every couple of weeks, and increased the doasage when my levels did not go down. I had a CDE tell me to keep calling my doctor, when I wasn't happy with the way things were going, she said most of them assume you are doing OK, if you don't.

I can only speak from my own experience but it took me about three weeks before my BG dropped to an exceptable level. One thing I've learned about diabetes is nothing happens fast except hypers and hypos. Try to be patient even though it is aggrivating. Also, it may be a blessing that your levels don't drop too quickly as I felt terrible when my BG first normalized. Seems your body gets used to the high levels and a slow progression is the way to go.

You didn't say anything about your diet but try to watch your carb intake as well.

My two cents anyway..and good luck, I'm sure control is just a week or two away.

I think Im going to start back on Atkins this week...so the carbs will DEFINITELY be watched.

It does take most of our meds (including Met) time to level out and do its job. I would check with the Doc to see if you need more after 3-4 weeks. I am never shaky from being high. Only when I'm low. I know what you mean though--I hate for my patience to be tested and it is continually. Just hold on and be patient. It will happen.

In my case it took three weeks on Metformin before my sugar started to come down and then it took about four months to see a really useful effect.

When I first came on this forum worrying that my medication was not working I was advised to be patient because it takes a while for things to work.

I'm on 1000mg a day. It took about six weeks for Metformin to really kick in. I must add that I don't rely on the meds alone. I eat healthy and exercise too. Meds alone wouldn't be able to do the trick in my case.

Its not just the meds taking time to be effective, its probably also glucotoxicity. When you have high blood sugar levels for a while, you have glucotoxicity. This actually makes it harder for the beta cells in your pancreas to produce insulin - viscious cycle. Keep up what you are doing and your beta cells (at least some of them) will improve their function (those that are dead, however, are dead).

I'm T2.....I'm on Metformin and Glyburide. My dose is Metformin 500mg and Glyburide 5mg at the same time in the morning, and then again in the evening. Seems like it took a while for it to bring my levels down.
