| More Diabetes Facts One in four African Americans have been diagnosed with diabetes. It is their 4th leading cause of death, but 730,000 do not know they have it. One in four African American women over age 55 has diabetes.
Approximately 24% of Mexican-Americans and 26% of Puerto Ricans between the age of 45-74 have diabetes and one-third of these do not know they have it.
Diabetes is very common among middle aged and older American Indians and Alaskan Natives. Only 9% have been diagnosed, but the incidence is believed to be much higher.
