Arrow What other stories have you heard of people not taking care of their health?

Hi, I live near a man that had diabete's and drank whiskey and beer everyday. One day he was cutting firewood and had a tree fall on his leg and crushed the leg pretty bad and wouldn't go to doctor or take care of it and it got gangreen in the leg and because it wouldn't heal up and the cause was because of his diabete's was so bad. This guy's weight was over 300lbs or more and he was short in height. He died in his 50's because of the infection in his leg.

Well, this isn't an actual story, but whenever I tell someone I have Diabetes, they say, "Oh, my aunt/uncle/cousin etc. had Diabetes - he/she had to have her foot cut off." I always picture a person sitting in the exam room, and the dr comes in, and says "Mrs. Jones, you have Diabetes - I'm afraid we're going to have to cut off your foot."

Like somehow, the treatment for the disease was the removal of a limb or appendage.

Yeah, they have to cut off your foot, because thats where all the desserts go. You know, when somebody says they are full, but they still have room for dessert in their big toe?

I copied this from another mesage board I post on--It is actually fairly typical of what can happen--sad, tragic, and so senseless, because it's althogether avoidable... Michael

"I am a local Chairperson for the ADA WALK for Diabetes and mother of 2 Type 1 children. Recently I have met a local 19 year old female who is severely affected by type 1 diabetes. She was diagnosed at age 12, had to drop out of school due to diabetes management needs, has multiple physical ailments related to diabetes, is for the most part house bound/bed ridden due to diabetes complications, used glucagon at age 13 up to 4X per week for a period of 6 months during which time she was hospitalized, is insulin resistant, uses the pump Plus lantus to manage diabetes, has a permanent catheter embedded in her chest because most of her veins have collapsed.........and I could go on. This teenager has no life, no friends and seems to be waiting to die. She lives at home and her mom cares the best she can for her..."

I went to a Diabetes Education class when I was first diagnoised. I met a guy there that was a few years younger than me and he also had just been diagnoised. That was almost 10 years ago, a few months ago I ran into him at our local coliseum. He was skin and bones and barely able to walk, I asked what had happened to him and he said "What do you think happened it's this *#@* sugar problem". He told me he had ulcers on both feet and was waiting for a kidney transplant. He couldn't figure out why I had no problems especially since I was taking more shots and insulin than he was. I told him you have to fight it, eat right, and excercise. He said it was to late for him to do any of those things. The whole time he was eating a hotdog and drinking a beer. I told him the only time when its to late is when they bury you.
