Smile Diabetes Class

I have an appointment March 19 at UTMB Galveston for a class on diabetes. The sessions are about 2 1/2 to 3 hours and start at 9AM. I have had diabetes for some years but have not had any counseling since I have been on medications. Type II and taking 3 diffirent medications. This class should be real good for me.

Has anyone been to a similar class? What did you learn? How helpful was it?

Thanks,
Millie

Benifical Everyone Should GO

Yes, Twice

I learned what diabetes is both types and the complications. How to reconize complications, but more importantly diabetes maintenance to prevent complications. Maintenance entails a lot more than just keeping ones blood sugars in control. You should learn about foot, skin, and eye care, then about exercise, and nutrition. Also medications, orals and the different types of insulin and how work. Speaking of insulin, leaned how to prepare for and to give insulin shots, actually gave myself a shot of saline. Oh yeah, how to reconize hyper and hypo glycemia and how to treat those conditions including how to prepare and give a glucagon emergency shot.

As it stands so far I still have both feet and eyes. Then reconized Mother going hypo and treated successfully without medical help.

Left some details out for brevity, but yes found it very usefull and would recomend anyone that has never had classes and refresher classes every five years. Knowledge and treatments of diabetes has changed a lot in the last five years.

Good Luck

I know of one person who took a class at the Weimar Institute in Northern California. It was called curing diabetes. They have you check in for several days, and go through a routine of motivational seminars, walking and exercising, and special food preparation techniques. They teach the people to not used foods that have been processed or that come in a box. They have to use all natural foods that they make themselves. They also avoid all dairy products and meat. It sounds pretty extreme, but it did work. All of his diabetes related complications went away, and he felt better than he had in a long time. Even his vision got better.

processed food

Jon-that reminds me---last week on the national news-I don't remember if it was Rather or Brocal, but he said that scientists have found that processed food causes diabetes...another new twist.
Hope my sugar gets low and I will throw out all my food again. If I have to grow my own food--I'll really be in trouble.
And yes Millien-classes are great and you learn a lot.

I assume that they were only speaking about type 2. I am a little dissapointed that the doctors are so quick to treat type 1 without looking in to what caused it. Other than a few questions about whether or not he had the flu recently, I don't think they did any investigating at all. I did read an interesting article on the internet that suggested a pancreas parasite is the cause, and you can get rid of it with a parasite cleansing. I don't believe everything I read on the internet, but I wonder if this would help.
The parasite is called Eurytrema pancreaticum or a fluke, and supposedly comes from cattle and pigs. They claim that you can not test for this parasite, but must undergo a parasite killing regime. I found this article at www.wellnessweb.com/altern/diseases/diabetes.htm . If anybody else has heard of this, I would like to know.

I did some more research on this pancreas fluke, and I found some good information. I don't know if anybody is interested, but there is an article at www.drhuldaclark.org that tells about parasite cleansing. I don't know a whole lot about herbal remedies, but they claim that if you can kill off this parasite and avoid foods with methanol in them that the pancreas will eventually heal itself and return to normal. I would love to hear from anybody who has tried something like this.

i would be interested in that too. if it is true it would be a simple cure for type1.
i think that there would be many questions though. why it would attack some people and not others and would it come back again.

the impression I got from what I read is that once you infected with the parasite, it can come back easily. The biggest problem with my son is he is such a picky eater that I don't think he could stick to the pure foods that it recomends. We live on processed prepackaged foods in my house, and it would be difficult to give them up and make everything from scratch. But maybe just going through the herbal treatment would be enough.

Skeptic

I have no doubt these flukes exist and if one was infected, getting rid of them would improve their condition. However the Doctors site mentions islet cells regenerating and coming back. I've always heard that once the islet cells are gone there's no getting them back. There's only so many of them and they only reproduce so many times so for a complete cure you couldn't have lost very many. The only organ I've heard of regenerating is the liver, but even there you still need about a third of it left to regenerate for full function. So I'm not saying you shouldn't try but I will say be carefull and good luck.

Look at what I just ran accross.

---------BETA Cell Growth Stimulated by Hormone------
(The Lancet) A hormone found in the intestines (GLP-1, or glucagon-like peptide) may be a possible treatment for type 2 diabetes, according to a new UK study. Free registration required to view this page.

that link isn't working for me even after registering. It is interesting that they would specify just type 2. I would think that repairing beta cells would be more beneficial to type 1.

After posting tried to register and it kept saying invalid user ID. Don't know why they only mention type 2. Heard that forcing beta cells to produce more for a type 2 can wear them out prematurely. That happens naturally to some type 2's when they run high for a long time or when some take beta cell stimulating type meds. See a lot of incosistancies reading reports and news articules about studies. On one hand they seem suspicous and on the other many of those reporting them in the news are in unfamilar territory. Makes it tough on those of us trying to learn and understand our options. So we have to be ever carefull.

Millien,

When I was first diagnosed.....1970.....the whole family took classes, plural. We went for three years in a row at the American Diabetes Association Headquarters....then in St. Louis Park MN.

Those classes are why I am still here now, and although I have complications.....I am here and working to stay around for a long time.

Good luck, lot's of new info since then!!!!!!
