It's not what I eat, it's when I eat it

Six months into diabetes...

I'm a Baby Boomer. For most of my life, I've eaten meals on an irregular schedule. I've never been a breakfast person. If I'm working hard on something - physical or mental - I frequently go all day without eating. Then I play catch-up.

The folly of this practice has been pointed out numerous times but it's always seemed like the thing for me to do. I was (am) comfortable with it. I have no doubt that it is probably why I now find myself in this situation.

My question: How does a person retrain themselves to eat three squares a day?

Counting carbs 'n all is fine but I don't even know where to start with this mess...

I've never been a big breakfast person--at the most, a Power Bar or something similar. Now, keeping a low-carb regime, I usually have an Atkins shake (or similar protein shake) having 5 or 6 grams of carbs, for breakfast. It's like drinking an extra cup of coffee.

I pretty much have always eaten lunch, however. If I have to eat at my desk, these days, I keep cans of sardines in olive oil and Atkins bars. One of each of those will hold me until dinner, perhaps with a late-afternoon snack of almonds if I get hungry.

I don't eat three squares a day either Mickey. I am a bit of a grazer. I eat a small breakfast (coffee, fruit) and then don't eat again usually until dinner. I will graze in the afternoon.

My biggest mistake is eating a late dinner. My husband doesn't come home until after six so dinner usually isn't until 7:30 or later. We walk late at night to try and compensate.

We tend to eat dinner late, as well. Generally, if I want my FBG to be lower than 90, I have to exercise after dinner.

Another late eater here. I work a 2nd job so its hard to eat dinner at a "normal" time. I do notice that on the weekends when i'm more active and eat earlier in the day, my blood sugars are much better.

I guess that is one thing that I could work on. I love summer and summer activities. I tend to want to do anything but cook dinner and eat. Where we live, it is hot and food is the last thing on your mind when it is 100+ degrees outside. I would rather walk in the evening than cook a meal.
